I haven't looked at this worklog since it was on the first page and I feel I should speak a little on the "elephant in the room". Apparently, no one else has the fortitude to tell you but...

You are sick. You need help. Plexitis is no laughing matter. You should seek professional help immediately. I fear though it may be too late for you.

I just went through eleven pages and this is one of the sickest mods I've seen in a while. The green on black looks amazing. The detail work is very inspiring. Actually I've gotten at least two great ideas from you that I think I'll incorporate into my mod. immitation=flattery

But at the same time it is somewhat depressing and immasculating for me. My girlfriend jokes that my case is the "extension of my manhood case". But seeing this... monster, I have a huge case of manhood envy. I feel inadequate and small. You suck.

Dude, this case is sick! It's so huge. However, I am glad to see that your case has a lot of detail. Most people who build a big case simply forget the details. You did not. That is what makes your case so special! Keep on the good work . Oh, question: is this thing able to pass through a door? (That was a serieus question!)

 

You know, I never tought about it, untyl the last hurricane was about to pass and then I had to move it inside the house, I mean is not that heavy right now but I couldn't wrap my arms around it or get a good grip; so my wife gave me a hand and a funny look

I got to confess guys, I put it in my desk and it was overwhelming seen this case towering over my computer and monitor, high about my head; I didn't like the feeling. My present case is bigger than anything you can buy stock, but this one is too much, kinda made me think I had made a mistake on the size. But that is the problem if you read the log I didn't plan it, to be this big and now is a monster. When finish it will have to be move once and then:

You could possibly convert the middle section into a closet for clothes'n'stuff? It could possibly house overalls without making wrinkles.

And about the gorilla-thing.. Hopefully your case won't have a mind of it's own or you've really made a monster As far it doesn't actually WANT anything, you can pretty much cope with it. The only problem I can see is that if (and pretty likely when) you move, you'll have to get that case to the new house through a window

 

Im sure that without to much modifications, you could make the computer into a desk itself.

 

This is how the MOB tray looks inside the case

I decided to sleve one of the cables to see how it would look

kinda like it better

back to the MOB tray, to see the difference

now that I know what I need to hold the cables, I made this plexi gromet plate

got to see how and where it goes in the case

I cut a desing into it, to add some green paint

first spray some green paint in the cover plates

then added a coat of black

after removing the masking of the gromet plate, this is the result

this is how it works, three pieces of plexi to clamp the HDs cables

this is the bottom plate cover, the center was left clear

the bottom plate is in place

the gromet plate and some cables are added again, to see how it looks


I'm very happy with the final results. Notice how the cover plates, covers the gap between the HDs bays and the fan area. A series of cover plates will cover it from top to bottom, each with a different funtionality and look. Once the plates, cover the exhaust fan box will be seal; and it would only suck air from the HDs removable racks and not from the MOB area.

Now I need a cover plate for the top to hold 10 jacks, it will connect the paddle and bulgin switches to something
Start with some plexi and pilot holes

all the holes had been finish to the proper size

dry fit to see where it goes

add some paint

add some jacks and holding screws

screw it in place

this is, how it looks so far


I have to make a couple of more plates, to fill that opening
Still I don't know how or where everything is gonna be connected, that is why I decided to do the cover plates with jacks, bringing all the connections to the inside of the MOB area. Then later all I had to do is plug in, whatever it is that need power.

This next cover plate will supply power for the HDS

Start with a design to hold 6 jacks

drill all the holes

dry fit it, to drill holes in the case

cut out mask for the design

time to add some green paint

remove the masking

cover the plate in black paint

finish cover plate

hardware to be added

cover plate ready for mounting

cover plate mounted in the case


Is not perfect, but I like it; too bad like a lot of other mods, it might become invisible when the case is finish. Already the fans are dissapearing, behind some stuff. I got to add a cover plate with a window, to see some parts of them.

what type of plug will you use next?

keep them coming, looks nice. How about an overall shot of the current situation? I can't seem to follow what sits where

after making a second one , we are ready for paint

Now added some hardware, I run out of jacks

Now I had to start work in the next one and continue untyl that side is fully cover.

Hdd frames an ventilation

Hi Crazy,

first of all my greatest respect for your casecon. If I would have enough room for such a monster I would follow your exaple right away.

I have just one little question on the cooling of your harddiscs, maybe I overread that point or noone did mention it ( I read all the pages till now!).
How does the air go through the hdd-cases, cause I understood that you have modded them like this:


gray: HDD, green: plexiglas, pink: mesh

So the air is sucked out by the five vents in the back that one is clear, but because of the perspex the air can´t go in at the front?! Is that correct?

That is a good point and I had to add, that when you install the HD inside the tray; there is hardly any space for the air to circulate around it. Those big intake grills ( and the little wimpy fan at the rear of the tray ) that the manufacturer put in there, are more for show; to make you feel that the HD tray is really going to suck alot of air. Then why I'm using them ? HTFK maybe I'm crazy, after all !

Now to anwser your question.

The plexi is not sealing off the front of the HD tray and the gaps are hidden by the handle, but not covering them.
Since I notice that the real obstacle to the air flow thru the HD tray, is the HD and that can't be helped; in my CrazyModder way of thinking a smaller intake ( thru those gaps ) won't make a lot of difference. I do know for a fact that the smaller intake will speed up the flow of air thru the HD. With the HD indide the tray, there is a small gap of space around the HD, for the air to ciculate. The big 120mm fans are the ones that gonna pull or suck, air really fast thru those gaps and hopefully this rushing air ( even do is small ) will help cool the HD better, than just using the wimpy fan the tray came with. At least that is what I expect.

The next cover plate is for the multimedia card reader, this is the desing; it has two plexi gromets for some cables.

its composed of three main parts

The inside cover plates are finish, the case is now divided in three areas. The left side contains the HDs and the air box for them. The right side is housing all the controlers and the air box for the radiators. While the center area is home to everything else, MOB, PSUs, Res and some other stuff that I haven't figure out yet. Notice all the different plates and depths in them, from the begining I didn't want it to be smooth or one piece. I was going for a stager look, more modular; that can be easy to work with. Why all the jack connections? Just in case I need them and since I don't know yet; where all the cables are gonna be connected, this way I just run a cable an plug it in. Now I'm getting an idea on how many cables I had to build, lets said its a lot.
Next I will start in the WC stuff, before I change my design again; which is at least, once a week. I finally decide how is gonna look like, of course isn't gonna look the way, I wanted in the first place.
The whole case has gone off course, will see what happens at the end.

Considering the amount of masking tape you used on the drilling, I'm amazed you didn't use it to get a better finish on the paint job.
