You caould have some sort of switch next to them that you, well, switch before taking them out. Or if there is going to be a lid on top, you could use a switch in the lid?
    Nice work BTW :thumb:

First off I'd like to say big respects for anyone who can weld aluminium like that, I tried once and just ended with a charred mess.
Have you got any concept drawings or similar from the start? It's always cool to see how a mod turns out compared to how it was originally planned?
But other then that awesome work so far and I wait its completion

They sure are, since they're using a 40mm fan as cooling. But they are'nt very hard to convert, or cool in other ways :)

UT2004? Well, maybe :D Have'nt really thought about it... Everything i possible :) As I said before, my inspiration comes from the warp core on Star-Trek enterprize :hip:

Even if it is'nt that obvious :D

I have'nt decided where to put the swithches yet. But the most practical would be to place them near each drive cage.

This works ok to remove the drive but unless you cut the power to the USB interface also it doesn't re-detect when you install another drive. This is the way both of my internal card readers work (If I use "remove hardware" the reader is effectively dead until I reboot) and the way three of my external IDE / USB drive controllers work. I haven't tested them all but...

I did something similar to what you have planned only I used a drive caddies in 5.25" bays and added USB controllers to those. In the end I put a power switch to the 5v line of the USB and another to the 12v line for the drive (this was pre-SATA). Ideally I'd recommend something like a switch in the lid (like r4tch3t suggested) with instant on to the drive but a short delay to start the USB (to allow the disk to spin up first - I had a few drives that gave me troubles without the delay).

That was my experience but if anyone has other workarounds I'd be very glad to learn.

Edit: the lights on Star Trek pic look pink - I'm real glad you went with orange :thumb:

This case gets better and better with every update! For the backplate, you're going to make your own, yes? If so, are you going to make your own PCI-slot covers out of plexi? It'd give it a nice look, I'd imagine.

Tyinsar: Is that so? Well then I'll have to rework my plans a bit... Thanks for the heads-up :thumb:

Yes I am. I'm going to make a bracket on the outside of the acrylic to be able to screw the pci/agp/pci-express(probably not... :D), into place. It'll probably look pretty sweet. I would like to be able to upgrade the components in this, that's why I'm trying to make everything fit the matx, and 1u standard, without modifying the components themselves.

You're welcome. I'm loving the mod & wouldn't want to see you held up by some silly little glitch.

I was (& still am) hoping that you or someone else would have a more elegant solution than mine.

More work on the rear of the case.

The frame, and mountingplate for the psu has been brushed with 180grit.

This is what it looks like, without the protective film. Damn, I missed a bolt :duh:

Time to cut openings for the expansion slots. The template I'm using:

There, lets cut. I've drilled, and milled these holes so the saw-blade can fit.

And there you go! Hell, what's wrong with my camera? Seriously

It is'nt quite done yet. I have to make holes for the Mobo connections aswell. I'm going to wait a bit with them until I know which mobo to use. I don't think there'll be an etching on the back though, I think it'll become a bit too busy...
