I've got my new macbook pro and i'm loving it the only concern i have is that when i turn it on or when it wakes from sleep the disk drive sounds like it's ejecting a disk even when there's nothing in the drive. my question is, is this normal. it's the new MBP with dl superdrive if that helps

Don't worry, all Macs do that. It's just checking whether or not there's a disc in the drive.

In fact, most slot-load drives do that regardless of the rest of the system.

yep, normal. it's a noisy little bugger, though.
fun to watch, stick a CD in the drive but not far enough for it to suck it in, then put mac to sleep and wake - watch it push the disc out!

well, maybe seconds of idle amusement. but your comment got the syntax partially correct. were it not for the faulty semantics i would have been forced into adulating agreement!

Cool, I thought it was only mine that did this as well, i find the sound that plays on bootup pretty annoying as well, is there anyway to disable it?

Nope, it's hard-coded into the boot :( It's distorted to hell on the left speaker of my MBP as well, even though both speakers are fine playing music (this isn't uncommon, to my understanding).

I'd stick with standby... much quicker, and a lot more reliable than anything Windows has ever offered in my experience.
