I'll be buying a playstation 3 in march (hopefully) so I would like the best HD TV possible with £400. Any ideas?, I would like to pick it up from a store (eg Currys) as I don't want to risk with an internet only company and home delivery. :thumb:

I think a 32" Samsung will be 720P- I've been looking around a bit and I've decided the best for a low budget would be 720P. I love the high contrast of Samsung LCDs, could get a great 4000:1 32" Samsung from Newegg for $1099 (I have no idea how much that is in GBP), but I'm going to wait until after the holiday so I have more cash, also I'm only going to suffer in my dorm TV-less for 2 weeks and by the time I get back from vacation price might be a little lower or I might be able to get a better TV. :)

Another option I'd consider on a low budget would be like a Samsung 30" slimfit HD CRT- the CRTs have been cheaper than the LCDs, I believe they have higher contrast and better response time too. The downside is even if it is a smaller CRT it's still a big, old, heavy tube TV.

Just make sure the native res is 720p and not some 768 high, otherwise the picture will look terrible.

i thought it was 1280 x 720! since they have 720 lines? could be wrong, but surely TV manufacturers would realise that 768 would look slightly retarded?

    it looks fine :)

look at the native res of every "720p" panel out there. they either stretch it to fill (which is hardly noticeable) or just black out the top and bottom 25 lines (which, again, is hardly noticeable)

ALL flat screen panels rescale the picture to fit the display. The difference between cheap TV's and expensive TV's is often the quality of the scaler, not the screen.

Well said, most people overlook this and moan like hell when SDTV looks like mud

I have the 30" Slimfit myself. I went with one for my PS3 and 360. I love it. My games look great, a CRT is capable of producing black colors better (or so I've heard) and a CRT is cheaper than an LCD heh. I will warn you though, the slimfit while 30% smaller seems like it weighs a ton more than my other TV (a 27 Inch Sharp that is larger than the slimfit in size). Still though, the TV has lots of inputs, 2 HDMI, 2 Component, 3 Composite and an S-Video along with Fiber-Optic Out for audio. It's a good buy and the price has been going down steadily on them.

I would recommend at least a 26" for gaming.

Unfortunately you do not get HD CRT's in the UK.

You can walk into any Dixons and see a Samsung Slimfit in the flesh if you like...

Some have a resolution of 1280 x 768, but those aren't common. 1366 x 768 is far more common. That resolution has the correct 16:9 aspect ratio (1280 x 768 is a 15:9 aspect ratio).

What is weird is that some 16:9 plasma displays will have a resolution of 1024 x 768 or even 1024 x 1024. Those displays will use no square pixels to display information and something I suggest avoiding.

    - aspect ration of 16:9
    - it must support 720p or else it will be downscaled to 480p. this issue will probably be fixed with newer ps3 revisions. maybe theyll find a way to fix it through firmware. but you never know .
    - hdmi. both versions of the ps3 have an hdmi port. take advantage of this and make sure the set has hdmi.
