Seems that you are back, at least at the Apple Core Duo thread. Hopefully you'll be updating this project log as well, you know we all want to see what you've been up to lately Just don't give up on this, it's way too good to go to waste. Janne
Yeah man. Get those pics up! Also can you clarify what "white thermal-sheeting" underneath the HDs is? I am currently toying with the idea of bolting the HDs down in my G5 case but am worried about any possible vibration noise... using the case as a huge heatsink though would be a good idea. Im also curious as to how you will be mounting the PSU. I will post my solution in my log tonight.
i was just wondering.. are apple hardrives proprietary too? if not why isnt that cool stock harddrive tray with the locking mechanisms being used?
I guess he is having the same issue as me - where to stick the PSU! As the Apple PSU is smaller and a different shape to a standard PC one it is located in the bottom of the case. The only other feasible place to install one is where the HD cage was in the original Apple. I guess you could rip the HD out and use it in the base of the case but i prefer the low profile of having them flat on the floor like Mr Bean has them.
@ Darkened: Yep, I am back, have a few days spare to finish off the motherboard tray, need to mill the receiver slots for the PCI cards, then it can go together. @ Cyprio: Well, it is really large pieces of thermal tape, I will take some pics and post it on the weekend. They are usually used for harddrive waterblocks, but you can also buy the Scythe Quiet Drive, they have 2 pieces inside.... That's what I did anyway, and they are much better for getting a better average heat transfer - due to larger surface contact area - to the metal surrounds - in this case I am bolting them to the bottom of my case, where the "old" Apple 600W PSU used to sit - I posted some pics of this already, have a look. You are correct wrt to the PSU location - it is going at the top rear, where Apple originally intended the HD cage to be....there is enough space, and I have already prepped this area to house the psu, as well as made the carrier-plate immediately underneath it to allow intake/scavenging of air from the motherboard area. The pics will explain it in great detail, no worries Just recieved my brandnew Apple Keyboard today, going to look great together with the G5 case and Apple Cinema LCD. Apple fanatics will be hard-pushed to identify it as non-Apple based PowerMac...lol... Thanx for your comments and replies, guys, appreciated.
Damn it's fun to be right, even if it is only once a year Looking forward to updates on this bad, bad apple Janne
why dont you use two shuttle psus and lay them down where the old psu went (or is this just a silly idea?!?!?)if so never mind lol
I can't mount psu's where old one used to be, that space now used by harddrives - 2x 320gig Seagates. There is more than enough space in the top to mount the standard 750W PSU, even my extra tall PC Power and Cooling 1KW unit can fit, so no need to go external. You guys will see, no worries - thanx for the input though
Looking forward to seeing how you'll fabricate the PSU in the case, knowing your style, it'll be awesome. How do you cut your alu sheets, by hand or do you have maybe a cnc router handy? If done by hand, bravo, those are some clean cuts Janne
