Ok. I'm trying to open some .wmv files but I'm having a bit of a problem. MPlayer, Niceplayer, DivX Player and Windows Media Player give me nothing, except some error. Now VLC does play the file, but I've got no sound and the video is all messed up.. I get flashy colored blocks..

I'm sure there is a way to view these files, all help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Old message:I use MPlayer for most of my video-watching. I never had much problems with it, I think it's a great player. The only thing it refuses to show .wmv files. Most .wmv's that I get are those 'omfg funny movie'-emails so I trash those immediatly.

But now I have a few video's I need to watch and they are in .wmv . Can anybody suggest me a player that will play these .wmv ? Or codecs so that MPlayer will play them? Oh yeah, I'd like it to be free...
    All suggestions are welcome.

WMP for OS X maybe? I don't have a mac but seems like an obvious choice to me.

It does indeed seem like the obvious choice. But no luck. It doesn't play them either. But I'll try a newer version.

Just tried the linked version, no luck! Maybe there is something wrong with my codec's? but aren't those installed when I install the WMP ?

I tried Windows Media Player (newest version) without any luck. VLC is the only player that gives some feedback. I get a video.. time seems to be accurate but it's all green and pink blocks.. some black and white.. just a mess. No sound aswell.

    Pleaaaaase help meee

Nope. I've been having this problem for as long as I can remember. But I never bothered to 'fix' it as the video's weren't worth the effort (funny email video's). I'm pretty positive it's not the videos itself. But thanks for your suggestion.

    Flip4Mac

iirc, this is what microsoft tells people to uses since they discontinued WMP/Mac.

indeedy, microsoft stopped supporting wmp for mac a long time ago :)

flip4mac adds wmv support to quicktime, and for the most part it works just fine.

could always use something like iSquint to convert to apple mp4

i've always had issues with getting macs to play wmv... chalk it up to MS and Apple not getting along

I tried flip4mac.. now I can open the files in quicktime.. but they still won't play.
I'll try to find iSquint, thanks for that suggestion cderalow. Since this is just a one time thing, converting is a very good idea.

    Thanks

I only have problems with certain codecs as they apply to .wmv...

i find it easier to just use iSquint to convert everything anyway

    Don't worry - Your Mac isn't broken :)

If I file has been encoded with WMV11 DRM than Apples cannot play it.

Flip4Mac will give an Error msg - (through Quiicktime)

Media Player for Mac wont play it - you will get an error msg.

VLC will try and play it - but the files are encrypted so you get the pretty colours.

When you play a WMV11 DRM encoded file on a PC, Windows Media Player literally phones the author of the file on the internet, gives them info about ur machine, and then gets permision - i.e. the encryption key - for the file to allow you to play it.

Hope this clears up any confusion.
