With my Canon 400D you can connect it via USB as if you were transferring images and there is an option to take pictures whilst the camera is conencted to the PC.
A browser comes up and you can change all your camera settings (ISO etc) on the screen and even take pictures by clicking with your mouse and the images then gets displayed on the screen.

I don't know if there is something similar for the Nikons.

Most laptops have an s-video out, not an s-video in.

If you just plug the camera into the USB port, it should appear on your laptop as a storage device. Nikon do a piece of software (can't remember the name off the top of my head) which allows you to control the camera from a PC - it should have come with the camera itself.

You can grab it off the Canon website, it's called EOS Capture.

It's called Nikon Camera Control Pro, see here. I have never used it so I can't comment on usability, sorry. As for the S-video, it is only availible in review mode, not on a per capture basis. And the picture quality is crap.

Your post reminded me that in my two months of Canon S3 ownership thus far, I haven't installed the software yet. So I did so before and played with remote capture a bit. That's some sick stuff!!
