I'm really not into AMD's chips, so I don't know which is which.

I would definetely go for Dual Core, for futureproofness.

What currency are we working in? For £300 you won't get much at all, stretch as far as you can tbh. :)

in the $300-450 range, no peripherals:

    Intel Core2Duo E4300
    Biostar P965 mobo
    XClio 450BL psu
    2x512 DDR2 800

And whatever hard drive and case and video you want.

Yeah, I know, but currency helps :) If 300-450 POUNDS, you could buy something, but not dollars.

If you in any way can afford an C2D-setup (E4300) then go for it. If you don't have the $$ needed, then I guess the X2 3800+ won't be too bad idea. Just look at the Price/speed-ratio of the X2-series and pick the one with the best. There's no other differencies AFAIK.

You can forget a dual core system... or anything like it for that matter, on a budget of just $300 - $450 (£155 - £230) :eeek:

You'll be hard pushed to find a new system at all on such a low budget... so you'd be better advised keeping your eyes on forums like this for anybody selling an older system

You can't get dual-core, but you can buy an Athlon64 system off of newegg for that price. They have a combo with a s939 3400+ and an Asus mATX motherboard for $95, you can also get 1GB of DDR400 for $77, a 6800GS for $99 and a 160GB SATA harddrive for $55-60. Then you just need to find a case(there is COOLER MASTER Centurion 534 that is only $40) a Power Supply(check the power supply thread stickied in this forum), a DVD drive, and a cheap CPU cooler. You can probably get that for around $450, but it may be a bit over with shipping.

    Remember:

$3-400 in usa can get you MUCH more hardware than $300-400 converted into £'s.

If its 450 you could probably get a lower end core 2 duo, but with little change left to buy the other components, soz,

To the people who said to buy a Dell or save up, well i spent about 430-450 on build.
What I have ordered and got already:
Amd 3800XP dual core: $100 (fry's combo motherboard deal)
    ECS motherboard:$50(fry's)
200gb Maxtor sata hard drive:$50 (deal!!!)
    Powamax case:43.99 shipped (ebay)
Thermaltake 430 watt PSU:43.99 shipped (ebay)
    NEC dvd burner:29.99 (newegg)
    Kingston Pc5300 1gb RAM:69.99 (newegg)
    120mm fans: 2 x 6.79 (newegg)
    80mm fans: 2 x 3.69 (newegg)
    Total:402.92
I will say i spent about 420-450 (within my budget), I didnt add tax from Fry's and I bought some stuff for the case but not PC related.
