okay, so i started to mess with my processor. I got it up to 2250mhz. Now, am a nOOb to overclocking, when is it time to stop rising the cpu frequency?

any overclocked 3800x2 ppl here?? should i keep goin?

    thanks

did you put a memory divider on

hell, i got that same damn chip to 3ghz on stock volts, than again, i have a World Record chip, so eh

Read up more on overclocking, and memory, before you keep pushing it. Did you prime 95 both cores for stability?

If you've got a WR chip, you're the ideal person to explain how this chap should improve his overclock :D

yeah, the memory to FSB ratio, AKA divider

and also, i just realized he had a AM2 chip, so i take that back.

    Sorry man.

Still doesn't change the theory of overclocking. If you can massively overclock 1 chip, you can do the same with another. The general theory behind dividers/memory speeds etc is the same with AM2 as it was with A64.

@sack, give this guy something to work with - whats the rest of your specs please?

I know, thus my statement is true.

I believe he is running into a memory issue, from the looks of it.

Which statement? That he needs to read up more? For a WR holder such as yourself it shouldn't be an issue to give him the benefit of your wisdom surley?

Sack, can you post a screenshot of CPU-Z's memory tab please? Should show the timings and speeds the ram's running at.
The SPD tab would also be useful if you can.

Drop the HTT to x3 so your HTbus is not going over 1000Mhz. Change the memory so it's picked up as 333, instead of 400 (or whatever it is atm). Up the cpu voltage a little bit (0.05 increase) and you should be able to clock your cpu more. I've got my s939 3800+ at 240fsb, 3xhtt, ram is 333, 1.4vcore. It runs noticeably quicker than stock.

how do i get my HTT dropped?? How can i change my memory speed? I dont know if i can change my memory. Not sure.

In the bios. Press Del or F2 when your computer's first booting up and have a poke round in the bios. If there are any settings you're not sure of, don't fanny about with them. Note them down and ask here. Mucking about too much could break your Windows install.

Well, it'll mean you can try overclocking your cpu (bump up fsb) without it hitting limits of other things, like memory and htt speed. Watch your temperatures (should be viewable in bios, if nowhere else).

Hmm.. that's weird, must've had a brain fart, my HTT is x4 then, as it's about 960. Well, at least with it on x3 for the moment it won't limit you. Perhaps stick it up to x4 if you don't get much over 250fsb for the cpu.

Also, I don't know if you've tried already, but try changing the ram command rate from 2T to 1T. That usually some free speed increase.

Perhaps feed the cpu a little more juice :) How much voltage is the cpu getting atm? Have a look in bios and cpu-z, see if they're the same.

If there's an option in the bios to set the cpu voltage (vcore) it should be fairly obvious. Set it by the tiniest amount above what it is (i.e. if it's 1.265 try the next one up, it may be 1.275 or 1.3, I dunno but don't take it too far at first and watch your cpu temperature closely). If temps get high (reading into the 50c area when idle) and it looks like you can overclock further, it'd be a good idea to invest in some better cooling, depending on how far you want to go.

If the option's not available, you're limited to what your cpu can do on your motherboard. If that's so, you can faff about with the memory, trying tighter timings (Set CAS from 5 to 4, for eg).
