Big thanks for all the links to 90 degree fittings... still haven't found the "perfect" solution, but we're OK for now...

Dome Blower Reduz... part 1...

After making these supports for the dome blower, the way the blower was looking was kinda lacking... it was too skinny... but the brackets work nice. They were cut from sprint car block off plates found on eBay way back in the beginning. They attach to the trailing edge of the video cards with #6 screws and nylon washers...



Not wanting to be stuck because of using scraps that were marginal in size, I used a 1-1/4" thick x 4" wide aluminum flatbar for the blower housing in front and a a 3/4" thick x 4" wide flatbar for the evacuation duct in back...



They were squared up on the mill...



The top of the blower housing and the bottom of the evacuation duct were machined to the shapes like this...



The left side of the rear duct was machined, and sanded to shape, including a hose guide for the line running into the video card cooling blocks... in the blower housing, a recess was machined for the fan base, holes tapped for mounting screws and a hole cut for the fan wires...



The red circle on the right is where the tubing will enter the backplate coming from the radiator, while the other circle is where the tubing will exit the case going to the radiator... and yeah, I'm confused too...



On the other side of the rear duct, I machined a small ledge, so the manifold can be attached securely using only a single screw...



This is where we're at so far...



From above... its coming together quite nicely.



Up next will be shaping the blower housing, making a cover plate for it, a clear amber cover between the two and a design machined into the top of these parts...

 

Wow, that blower is madness...

How much do you think it weighs, considering that whole chunk is machined out of a single block of aluminum? Incredible craftsmanship though, and excellent design.

 

^^^ I don't know... the pile of chips is pretty big. A good guess is that about 80 - 90% of it wil be machined away before its done... so 6 -12 ounces.

seriousy, though, that is some good milling. are you going to keep that gap over the water blocks, or are you going to bridge it somehow?

Yeah, it'll be "bridged" with a see-through plastic cover (don't wanna see the video cards but want to see the cooling blocks 'n stuff). I'm waitin' on some cutters to put slots in both of these aluminum pieces, so that the cover can be flush with everything, but not require any screws or fasteners. Hope that makes sense...

yep, makes perfect sense.

one thing I would suggest is to put some more support to the blower duct and fan housing rather than just the vid cards incase it gets turned on its side for whatever reason. Would be a shame to damage the vid cards due to an accident of that nature.

 

Looks very nice but make sure to show off the fact that you have THREE video cards.

 

To "clear" things up a bit...

I tried some milling on the bridge between these aluminum pieces... it worked out great... wasn't sure how plastic would fare under a carbide cutter, but it was like slicing butter.

I'll mill some slots in the aluminum pieces to take the pared down ends of this acrylic cover (hope that makes sense)... and there will be a small clearance between the plastic and the waterblocks...



Anyways, this ought to give ya an idea what I'm up to...

Holy crap. I wish I had some tools like yours. And I know how much money that flatbar costs. I'm guessing $60-80 for that duct alone. Nice work

Now that is some sexy machining. And I have to say, that I love the orange Acrylic blended with the shiny metal. Perfect work!

(If I were you I'd propably be sitting with it every night going "My precioussssss!" )

 

I must agree, something like a light gray plexi would look much better than the orange. The choice is yours though, Ill be amazed either way.

 

Since the dome is already orange, the orange-orange mix would turn the second plexi almost opaque. the best idea would be to use clear plexi, and the orange dome will provide the orange tint.

 

Amazing mod. I just dont understand the purpose on this blower-outlet combo, as it seems to only cool the fittings of the waterblocks. Or is it supposed to exhaust hot air from the dome?
