The shot of the X from the side with just the heatsinks showing is amazing, sexy and a few other things as well. Almost a shame that won't be the final front, i'd want to sit and look at that all day!

congrats on the frontpage and a verry promising looking case.
Was just wondering about one thing.. how will you distribute the heat between all of the heatsinks? I understand you will use heatpipe to transfer the heat from the pc to the heatsinks but whatabout from one heatsink to the other? Is there such a tight and smooth fit between each of the sinks that you could use thermal paste without worrying about loss of alot of cooling ability?

i would use phaseplanes instead of pipes. they are flat and can be bend by hand.

You could also put some fins on the inside faces of the heatsinks.
Fins can absorb heat as well as dissipate it.
For some sealed equipment they do exactly that, they use a double sided heatsink on the enclosure wall with an inner circulating fan. This cools gear in very dirty or wet environments.

Think about creating a path for the air inside to circulate, place fins in the path to pick up heat and transfer it to the outer fins. Use 120mm fans at 7v or with variable speed controls, rubber mount them so the vibration is not transferred to the case.

You might also think about watercooling, quiet, low RPM pumps are available.
You have a lot of heatsink area, if you put copper serpentine loops on the backs of all the heatsinks, that's alot of surface area. It's all about moving the heat from areas of high concentration to place with larger surface area.

Just came back from a long work trip. Havent had much time for anything.
Off again for a week...

I did attach the heatpipes to the mainframe. Bending of the pipes is a nightmare.
Its little bit all over the place right now. I had to disassemble the whole thing just to measure things. So frusturated that I forgot to take the pictures. I will send new pictures as soon as possible.



Dreamcaster: Thanks for the good tip. Page was great. got some good inspiration from there. They proved that it can be made.

The Gnu: It is really hard to have a 100% tight fit between the heatsinks. I did some testing. I does transfer heat inbetween, but not a great deal. I havent tried it with thermal paste (so messy).I will try to have many heatpipes going to different parts of the case to distribute heat evenly.

Dekemp: Heatpipes are by Mcubed. Got them from one store in Finland.

Garbach: I also realized that my design looked like a spacefighter. I tought it looked little bit like a TIE Interceptor

Starman97: I try to keep case totally passive. And I would not even dare to jump in the watercooling wagon. Mayby next mod.

What kind of PSU are you using? Also passive?

Reminds me a lot of my own fully passive htpc case I have been doing last months. I used heatpipes from Zalmans HDD Coolers, ZM-2HC1 and ZM-2HC2. The old model ZM-2HC1 have a lot better pipes that the new one. They tolerate much more bending... I can also recommend the semipassive PSU I used: ElanVital EVP-5007. Stays fully passive under 250W load.
