. . to the old riddle of when 3 men pay from a hotel room, each paying $10 for a total of $30 for 1 night. Later that evening the hotel manager realized that he should have charged only $25. So the manager gave the bell boy $5 to return to the gentlemen. The bell boy returned $1 to each of the guys and kept $2. So, each man only paid $9, so 9X3 is 27 and then the 2 that the bellboy kept makes 29 and where did the extra 1 go? My mother just called and asked me about this, and for the life of me I can't remember the answer. I know it's simple! Can anybody help me out.
you're going in the wrong direction, you don't need to get to 30, but to 25 so $9x3 = $27, - $2 (bell boy) = $25 I think this is the answer... agh, there was a thread about this a while ago if I recall corectly...
Yeah, I remember that thread and that's why I posted up here, cause I knew y'all were smarter than me in remembering the answer. Thankx relix, that makes sense.
Relix is right, the hardest part about figuring this problem out is figuring out the proper math. (word problems are always trickey, especially in physics)
hehe, you really help my mother out, I called her back to let her know, and she appears to be the genius at her office.
i cant be arsed to read it.. could u space it out and explain it more clearly? i'll work it out then..
3 men want room, pay 30$ (= 3 x $10) owner of room says $5 too much, gives receptionist $5 to divide over them 3 receptionist gives each man a dollar, and holds $2 for himself. now for the riddle: $27 (3x9) + $2 = $29 <> $30 -> howcome? real math: $27 (3x9) - $2 = $25 -> right answer that's very short and stuff
