adamjones01101: ...and then your friend plugs your expensive joystick or mouse in, not knowing that it goes to the fridge. BOOM! Still, it's a neat idea. I'm having a hard time believing that they pulled 10w from a USB port. USB is powered from the +5VSB line, I believe (note how your mouse stays on when the PC is off!), and 10w = 5VDC * 2A. Some PSUs don't even put 2A out on the SB line to begin with! Please, post the response if you get one.

^^ Dubious. 1W power consumption - assume 40% efficient - that's 400mW of heat extraction. I can't see that ever cooling a can of coke without some super insulation...
Not exactly a full sized fridge, but it'll cool a can of coke http://usb.brando.com.hk/prod_detail.php?prod_id=00286
You might be able to link up several USB ports, but isn't that a bit of a waste of USB ports? You could need 20 of them to run something of decent size, so unless you want to buy lots of PCI USB cards, its not very doable. http://ueba.net/hosted_pages/USB-Cooking-20060822 That proves its possible to link up USB for the power you need, and it looks like he used 10W resistors there. Thats really unpractical though.
This may be the alcohol talking, but am I the only one who noticed that the topic starter hasn't been here for 2.5 years, and that this thread was reanimated by somewhat of a spammer? If so, yay for me, and I should get a cookie. If not, everyone can have a cookie. Either way, a cookie's definately coming my way More on-topic: thanks to the time between the original post and now, more geeky options for USB coolers/mini-fridges have become available. Cookies for the manufacturers!
Cookies for all. Good eye for noticing that. Now I won't have to waste my time on this thread anymore.
