Looking to try and get the most out of what I have and upgrading.... As I managd to buy at what musty have been the 939 lifespan I am now wondering if its worth it!

Any ideas... with only a 500W power supply can I get away with upgrading the rig (in sig) with:

    2Gb Mem
    AMD 64x2 4400+
    8800GTS

This comes out at a £357.68..... hmmmm!

Is any performance improvement I get going to outlast getting a new machine now?

    *EDIT*
I realise that I'd be dumping the existing memory in favour of the new....

What brand is the PSU? A decent brand 500W PSU should be ok, but if it's a no-name I'd consider saving up a few more pennies and getting a decent PSU.

That should be ok tbh - they're not a bad PSU, have one m'self. :D

In fact I'll probably be doing nearly the same as you and picking up a 640 GTS in September too. (Hurrah for student loans!)

...the point of the post was "is the upgrade justified?" :)

I just found this so now know the PSU is enough :)

I would be very wary of PSU calculators tbh, but it will be enough. :)

And an upgrade is always justified as long as there'll be a performance boost. :D

Hehe, just what I thought. :)

    Back on topic:

My system runs on a 500W PSU so the system you're going for should do fine. But are you sure you can't wait for AMD's quad core stuff? Price drop, maybe? ;)

Yes I could wait ... just that I've been waiting a few months now :)

there's always something around the corner.... and I'm inferring that you would get a new system in the price drops..?

I won't return to AMD any time soon as it stands right now. But I'm actually thinking about getting my hands on a Q6600 after their late price drops.
And by the way... I've been planning on a new build since the first Athlon 64 arrived. ;)
