He's got a point as far as value for money is concerned (for some of M-Audio's catalogue). Most products outside of M-Audio are a diminishing return: paying incredible premiums for alleged and unsubstantiated improvements to the actual listening experience. Polk Audio are another hard hitter when it comes to cost-to-performance. I enjoy quality audio, but I don't need to shove heavy-gauge speaker wire up my asshole to justify calling myself an audiophile without paying some $1200 for stereo headphones.
I be using a set of Logitech Z-5500 5.1ch via coax spdif from my ASUS Supreme FX sound board (7.1 + independent stereo @ 192khz 24bit) sounds WELL nice
oohhh i just love making sweeping but incredibly vague generalizations based on hearsay without any convincing evidence.
Well as sub-standard as it will be for you guys mine's either an Audigy 2 ZS + Grado SR80's, or a Phillips CDR-80 and Yamaha EX396 with a pair of Eltax Liberty 5+ floorstanders/Grado's... Not the best, but it sounds nice to me, and it doesn't cost the earth! *imagines _dom and _tad weeping at crappy audio...*
What's best for you is not necessarily best for me... But, hey, to each his own, if you're jammin' out to your rig, power to ya!
Welcome to Bit-Tech!! I use a sony surrond sound system 5.1, modded to 7.1 lol, sounds funny but it's amazing esp with the 120w sub under my corner desk, sounds like huge subs in a car Other than that I rock a Southwing Bluetooth headset until my new headsets come in via Bit-Tech !!
Hmm, good stuff right there. I had a pair of SR60s, which were excellent value. A tad uncomfortable to wear though, and the simple foam padding had a hard time staying on. Still, exceptional sound! Grado makes the GS 1000--$1000 dollars?! People say they cut down a hand-picked tree for the wood for each pair of GS 1000 headphones.
Even theyre horribly uncomfortable (though not as bad as the old RS1s) Apparently the word "ergonomics" doesnt exist in Grado's vocabulary :/
i use the following currently. Auzentech X-Meridian connected to my reciever by a toslink fiberoptic cable Yamaha HTR6060B JBL Venue Stadium Floor Standers JBL Venue Voice Centre Channel JBL Venue Book Shelf Speakers (rears) Athena ASP-4100 Sub
do you use DD Live or DTS interactive? I recently picked up an X-Plosion for the htpc, and theres a little 'blip' of silence before sounds play, which is nothing, but irritating none the less
I actually found the Grados pretty comfortable. The trick IMO is to bend the headband out a bit, so that instead of clamping your head like regular cans, they're just kind of resting on it, and the cups aren't pushing on your ears. Of course, my AKGs are a lot comfier than my Grados... and sound a lot better. Electrostatic FTMFW!
Ah, man, I love Stax, just wish I had the money for them. The K340s are a hell of a can for the money, if you can find them, because they're pretty rare. There's only a dozen or so people on Head-fi with them, out of a member base of over 50,000.
