heyhey, about to pull the trigger on a system for stuff. mind giving it a once over to make sure i haven't made a brain fart? cheers q6600 g0 (ordered!) asus striker ordered p5n32-SLI 4x1GB Corsair Dominator,DDR2 PC2-6400 OCZ 2x2GB PC6400 5-4-4-15 DDR2 (ordered!) EVGA 8800GTX ACS3 (changed mind, am buying an 8800 ultra card and the beastly thermalright HS for silence) (ordered!) 500 Gb Western Digital WD5000ABYS Caviar RE (changed mind, ordered raptor) a random SATA DVD burner (ordered lite-on) 24" Dell 2407 (ordered the HC edition from pcbuyit) corsair 620W (ordered!) antec p182 (ordered) that beastly noctua heatsink. (changed mind, ordered thermalright ultra 120 extreme) already got the other bits like soundcard and peripherals. thoughts?
it is sorta, i guess. my desire to buy a new PC has been greatly amplified by bioshock and the fact i now have a job, so i can afford to splurge a little. but how should i CHANGE it?
looks good get a thermalright ultra120 extreme, and a sflex 1200 for quiet cooling its about the best combo out there, if it ill fit u case, its a monster! and as i always say in these quad core hardware threads. DITCH THE ASUS STRIKER. its a poor overclocker for quad cores, and too exspensive. do you want to OC the quad, and do you need all the features of the striker.... really? if you must have a 680i chipset get the EVGA its cheaper, and is about the best quad clocker. if you do not need all the features, and you need sli look at a 680lt chipset. the majority of stiker / quad owners i have spoken to have poor fsb ocing on strikers, and i include myself. if you do not need sli get a p5k asus there good clockers of quads, better than the 680 chipsets. PS get a 150 raptor, ther fast and resonably priced, best disk for your OS.
The striker isn't the best of boards, despite it's reputation. I'd go for the new TT BigOrb that Bindi reviewed - a very competant product for not a massive amount. Other than that, it looks spoogetastic.
not 2x2GB? I just picked up a 4GB OCZ PC6400 Platinum (5-4-4-12) kit for a decent price, 2 sticks would make matters simpler, and leave the option of 6-8GB in future (because thats obviously necessary)
2x2GB is higher latency... does this matter? also, how does it OC? not that i care too greatly about phat clocks, but it would be nice to eke a little extra out. will swap out the striker for a p5k-DX - it's cheaper and i don't _really_ need a 2nd graphics slot.
If you are concerned about a couple hundred 3D marks, or a ms in superpi, then yes it does matter back in the real world, latency has little to no impact on games/application performance (especially such a slight change of 4-4-4 to 5-4-4) eg - 1fps here and there in games, three seconds ripping a dvd, this is what youre getting.
aight, will look for a decent 2x2gb set. it's a shame scan doesn't stock more memory as i am ordering everything through them atm (easier with after sales if i use one source) EDIT: link to the memory you bought? fastest OCZ 4gb kit i can naively see is 5-5-5-12
I would link-to, but I'm smuggling them over from newegg OCZ product page http://www.ocztechnology.com/produc...0_vista_performance_platinum_4gb_dual_channel Mushkin does a PC6400 4GB kit with tighter timings, but its pricy. They also do a PC8500 2x2GB kit, but it is obscenely expensive
Just a quick note on the striker, the 1303 bios is apparently much better for the quad oc'ing from what I have read. And the striker is worth it, the EL back panel is worth EVERYTHING!
it does when you're running a buttload of apps at the same time! decided to change mind a bit and go with a BFG 8800GTX and a thermalright cooler on it for silence - works out about the same price. am still flipflopping on mobo. am in two minds... edit: woop! partially ordered bits. waiting for g0 for other bits!
what words do you guys have about the asus blitz formula? it has a much better layout than the p5k deluxe...
I have been very happy with a Lite-on one, i nearly fried it once when plugging the power in with my computer on (lots of sparks - don't ask why i did it) and its still going stong
Very nice system here, Can't wait to see it in action and the marks show up. That OCZ rams are amazing go with it if you can Good luck.
