Scratch Build – In Progress My Homebuilt CNC Machine

I've been working on a CNC machine from scratch which I've been keeping a complete video log of the whole build. It's my third month on the machine and I have about 31 videos so far from the complete structure to the the electronics. I have just finished the power supply, driver and hooked up the motors and I tested the machine with perfect results. If you're interested in building one to help out your mods, this may be the ticket. ComputerKing: Thanks... It's getting there. However, there is a ton of information still yet to be posted.

Elbarto: The electronics cost list should be done tomorrow by the end of the day. Keep posted. I'm also hoping to add some alternatives for a super cheap build. You may see that the entire build can be less than $250.00 (it is possible, but not for cutting any material.).

My next videos show how to mount the router, or whatever your tool choice is (laser, extruder, heat gun, dremel, plasma cutter (well, maybe not), etc.)

Always love to see people building these kind of things as Im currently working on a routertable for my drillpress, and it has some similaritys.
Nice webpage too. However I dont think this thread fits in the project logs section as there is no images or log posted yet.
But a very interesting video log. I'll give it a complete whatch when I got time because im shure its worth it.

router = I'm assuming wood only, and not for working with metal? (Sorry, haven't really gotten the time to just sit down and look through the site)

 

Thaks to all. I found this forum site by accident and I really like it. If there is a more appropriate thread location, I am open to suggestions.

With the correct feedrate and router speed, you can route most non-ferrous metals (coolant helps, or that compressed air in a can). Aluminum will gum up if it over heats.

I am looking in to making a kit. What's better... I might actually teach the usage by showing how to route out offsprings from the first. That will be in the software, programming and design tutorials portion of the project. Anyone that produces this CNC has the ability to create kits. Who knows what the future holds.

Touching base: I am almost finished with the structure and the electronics. I am now showing the router mount assembly and then it's off to the software and some test cuts. Disregard the kids in the background. http://www.buildyourcnc.com

 

I'm not sure about this specific build, but the sweet things about these home builds is you can put pretty much any router/bit combination you want, so if you want to do metal, you could. You'd have to compensate for material feed rate, as well as being careful not to overheat the material or bit. Its not even necessary to use a router, i've seen a few of these homebuilds that use plasma torches to cut steel.

The site and concept of a video diary is fantastic, i really appreciate all the information you put up there! I've been messing around with the plans for my own CNC so to see the success of someone else is quite encouraging

 

Now all we need is someone to do it in metric so I can build one without having to get my calculator out!

Now this has so many possibilities. I can definately see trying to make this in my future.
