I really should upgrade to a touch, my 3G ipod 20GB is quite out of date and on deaths door.

9/10 iPod users are listening to highly compressed audio more likely than not, so sound quality is not exactly an extremely important feature. Playing MP3s through my iPod sounds no worse than playing them through my Martin Logan Odysseys (at least no worse than can be accounted for when considering that I'm using headphones instead of electrostatic speakers).

Might as well buy the iPhone while you're at it since they cut the price drastically :p

How long until they've got a "Touch" with a HDD in it?

Hardware Hackers, get to it! :)

and again they arn't as good as the Archos - the gen 5 is SWEET and makes the iponce touch look rubbish
    http://www.archos.com/products/gen_5/index.html

Also cheaper, with more features and a better screen? Nobody will hear of them though as everybody else gets piled under the apple marketing steamroller.

Whilst the Archos series are nice and feature-packed, they're not exactly pocket-sized are they?

I'll get the ipod touch when it offers a decent size hard drive inside. For now though, my old 3g ipod will do.

Actually, I bet that the 'touch' still has all the iphone parts inside and they just need activating :p

nope, apple learned that lesson with the apple TV.

as for me, I think I'll wait a product cycle or two as I still have a perfectly good 5th gen v1 30GB model.

Quite true. Both the iRiver Clix2 and Cowon D2 are great little players that will not get the attention that they deserve. I have an iRiver Clix2, and everyone who has seen as has marvelled at the quality of the AMOLED screen which is great for watching movies, soccer, and TV shows. It looks great too and is far better looking than the fatty nano. I didn't want a touchscreen player, otherwise, by all accounts the Cowon D2 is supposed to be great - 50hr playback, SD card slot, 2.5" screen and only slightly larger than the ipod nano.

So what is the 'Touch' for? sounds like a touchscreen PDA, oh but nicely locked down so not much apps.

I think it's for posing with and not much else, imo.

The touch sounds much like a very restricted PDA with music playback capabilities.
