So you would probably recommend anything above a E6500? or would you say id need to go even higher? my current cpu is @ 2.0ghz but i know its not always comparable with intel and amd.

I really appreciate your help by the way. I normally do all my own research but I was sure my current cpu would be ok.

    Thanks for your time.

My 3dmark06 score was only 6900, about 900 higher than my 7950gt.

Seems your cpu + ram + motherboard can't release the power of 8800GTS. It should be over 8000 marks and around 8700marks if you have an 2.9Mhz core2duo system... Try search for forum for people using 8800GTS with AMD X2 + DDR system and see if they have the same problem as you do...

The point is, 8800GTS 320MB wouldn't give you a huge speed bump. It is just a card that a bit faster than 7950GT with DX10 and AA in HDR mode supported. May be you should consider to go for 8800GTX, which is 33% to 50% faster than your 8800GTS.

there you have it, only 7000, whereas i'm getting 8600 with a stock BFG 8800GTS 320MB OC (550/800) on my system (see sig). and when i overclock the 8800GTS to 650/1000, i get a score of 9700 (still trying to get 10k)

so my guess is that your CPU is bottlenecking. so getting a GTX will still be bottlenecks

I agree. I have an overclocked EVGA 8800 GTS 640mb (580mhz clockspeed/1350mhz shader/1700mhz memory clock speed) and when I tried 3dmark the other day it got up in the high 9k's on my q6600 system.

Yep I think i have concluded that this is the case indeed.

Im going to take the 8800gts back to the circuit city I bought it from.

Then, over the next few weeks im gonna pick out a system on newegg.com and start from scratch.

I know it could be my psu or other factors as well, so im going to build a brand new system with all quality components, as im tired of chasing this ghost problem.

Im thinking of going with a e6750 dual core, as this should provide a nice increase in cpu power.

um... in this case, i would go for Q6600 if i were you!! Everything is going multi-threading/tasking. Some games already take advantage of quad core power already!! So Quad core is the way to go mate!!

*looks at my games folder* not a single game uses more than 50% on all 4 cores :( not even Supreme Commander. i am still waiting for a game to use more then 60% of the total processing power of my 4 cores.

    3.6Ghz? wow that's a lot to ask for a poor q6600.

im currently tightening my RAM timings, now at 4-4-4-10, but i doubt that makes a difference.

may i ask how did you get so high score? i still can't break the 10k barrier with GTS overclocked to 650/1000 :(

I dont know why your Q6600 isn't flying? i have heard them up too 4GHz on air, so i am not sure about yours.

below is an image link of a score of 11,100, but gts clocks were 585/820 and the Q6600 was at 3.37GHz

    http://img65.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hahahaahabitchesny5.jpg

highest i have scored is 11,678, and thats with the Q6600 at 3.5GHz and GTS at 630/870.

il make you feel ill if i tell you my Q6600 has intel stock cooling atm!!

The 8800 should be fine at 1280 res, it's really pointless getting much/anything faster than that at the moment for that res.
Don't have any issues with WoW/8800GTS 320 and 1280 res, running with AA/AF and framerate is ok. (Can check if needs be)

Try re-installing drivers/windows and see if that helps.

im not ill now that i see you are running XP. XP helps a bit with gaming performance.

what settings are you running your CPU at? what FSB? what voltages? what temps? and what memory timmings/frequency?

after testing with 3Dmarks 06's default settings, (was testing with native res of 1680x1050, ya see) i got 9935 with 3.1Ghz quad + stock 8800GTS. but only managed 11516 at 650/1000. 675/1050 is as far as my card will go with meaning full numbers (1073 is a bit meaning less to me, 1050=2100Mhz, a good number to me)

haha thats the funny bit! my gigabyte board with the P35 chipset is a great OC'er, i mean its adjusted the volts automatically as i have OC'ed.

i push 2.2v threw my ballistix's, so i can run them a little harder. so 3.6GHz =400x9 most likely 1.33v on the core, il have to check.

i have a feeling once i have got my aftermarket CPU cooler, (still deciding) it will go further than 3.6GHz.

Do you have the B3 or G0 stepping?

where are you reading the Vcore from? if it's not in the BIOS, it might be low due to Intel's speedstep thing.

    i've got a G0. L727A batch

CPU-Z reads 1.34v, guys this gigabyte is a real gem of a board. the NB is passive and handles the high FSB's with ease, i will change the NB cooler for a active cooling solution, then see if 3.8Ghz is on the cards...
