Hi guys i was going to get a scythe s flex (1600rpm) rated at 28db for my thermalright 120 extreme cooler and 2 scythe slipstream fans (1600rpm) to use as front/back fan in case, rated at 33db. What i want to know how loud will it be, i know it won't be quiet but i don't want it too loud, i have my music quite load so will it be enough to cover it completely and my case seems to block sound quite well.

Now to kill that msn virus spreadin itself to all my contacts lol

Well thats going to be about 37 or 38dB worst case, the general rule is:

When Two Decibel Levels Differ By:
    0 -1 dB
    2 -3 dB
    4 - 9 dB
    10 dB or More

Add the Following Number to the Higher Value:
    3 dB
    2 dB
    1 dB
    0 dB

So taking the difference between the 2 x 33dB fans as 0dB thats plus 3dB and the difference between the 33 and 28dB is 5dB so thats plus 1dB so id say roughly 33dB plus 4 dB making about 37 possibly 38dB worst case...

At least I think thats right

What that translates to in real terms I don't know but Im sure your music could cover it

    Seagate's table gives 36.6dB.

    Invest in a rheostat. ;)

Yeah mine was a rough guide, just shows how to work it out roughly for a set of values...

The formula for calculating total noise is: total dB = source dB + ( log2(no. sources) * source dB/10)

cpemma has an even more anal precise formula lying around somewhere.

The "official" formula :p is here, but to make life easier, Korndog's little program does the maths for you and gives "about 37.5dBA" in this case. So we're all batting in the same ball-park. A bloody noisy place. :blah:

Do you really need the cooling power? Or are you just anal about temperatures.

a bit of both i need good airflow as i overclock everything in my computer i just can't live without not doing so on the other hand say if i got the same overclock at 50 degrees and 44 degrees cpu temp and that small diff cost me an extra £25 or so i will pay. I dunno i guess i have a thing for temps :worried:
