I want to mod my laptop :wallbash:

For years I have been modding my desktop computer (with varying degrees of success), and we have all seen the difference between the modding experience of when it all started (Macro case by macroman, recently re-featured on bit-tech), and what it is today (just look at this years nominies for mod of the year, also featured here on bit-tech.net), or check out any of the projects in the projects thread. I am amazed and in awe of all of them. :jawdrop:  - and call me old fashion - I still really like the Macro case mod.

Anyway - the era of the laptops are some what upon us (somewhere I read that laptop sales have in 2007 out numbered desktop sales) - and though laptops are not likely to be able to compete with the bleeding-edge game setups anytime soon, I still find that laptops are now in the price range where even I have considered spending some of my own (very limited) private fonds on a laptop.

With the result that it - of course - have to be modded :dremel:

(also couldn't really mod the previous laptops I have been in contact with, as they have all been company laptops).

Enough with the talk :duh: lets see some pictures :eeek:

Most laptop mods I have seen so far (or have noticed and taken a second look at), has something to do with changing the color of the laptop.

    My own laptop included:

Before - and a couple of after pictures (Click for larger images)

I found it at: forums.bit-tech.net -> modding -> Laptop Mod by Pegasus
    Original probably at: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=144120

So my question to all of you fellow modders out there: show me some inspiration as to what mods I can do to my laptop!

I'll start out with a few that I have found my self.

Kowal Portable Typewriter and Adding Machine

A lady (Mary Robinette Kowal) have taken the stencil idea one step further, let me show you.

    Before:
Obviously a workhorse laptop, that has been used for catching quite a few thoughts and putting them into cyberspace.

    The inspiration:
    [IMG] [IMG]
Old school typewriters. Mary has a video of these and more inspiration here

Design idea, and the top of the laptop:
Its a very nicely designed sticker for the top of the laptop.
The idea has been seen before, and there are several places where you can get som beautifull designer made stickers (I suppose they are called decals or stensils, you guys have to help me out here).
I stil think that Marys design is quite original and very well made.

    Taking it one step further:
She's adding sticker cutouts to the keys  I like it!

IMHO this is one of the details that makes this laptop-skin-mod stand out.

    A few after shots:

    Outstandig job IHMO :thumb:

    I found it at: http://www.maryrobinettekowal.com/journal/the-kowal-portable-typewriter-and-adding-machine/
    Original probably at: http://www.maryrobinettekowal.com/journal/the-kowal-portable-typewriter-and-adding-machine/

So what do you guys think?
Show me some of those skin-mods that you have found out there.

    Hi modgodtanvir,

where did you find that mod?
If at all possible, I'd like to give credit to the original creator of the idea.

Lol here you go. It really is pure brilliance:

Not technically as advanced as it could have been... leaves the door open for another modder to have a hack at it...

Laptop mod anno 2003 by six7seta

Here is a mod way back from 2003. I think that six7seta was ahead of his time with this one.

Laptop and mouse with the same silver and light-blue theme
    [IMG]

six7seta even added some life to the bottom of the case
    [IMG]

...and some added bling to the top of the case
    [IMG]

    I found this at: forums.pcapex.com -> case_modding -> 12080-laptop_mod

i guess the coolest thing anyone gould do to a laptop (IMHO) would be to place it completely in leather. I'm thinking the style of Filimon's mod (or as close as humanly possible) without all the copperwork ofcourse :p

More technically, there's a zilion cool things a man could do to a laptop:
    * detachable keyboard for typing comfort
    * height-adjustable screen for your neck
    * integrated power cords/adapters
    * LEDs + acrylic for some sweet lighting effects
    * auto-deploy: laptop opens itself with a motor (preferrably voice-activated or something awesome like that)
