well, it all started with me being bored....so sitting there at my desk i noticed the usightly mess coming from my psu...so low in behold in bought some braiding and went to town....however, on 1 molex connector i accidentaly flipped the 12v abd 5v lines....so you guessed it, lots of smoke. i plugged everything back in and the bios didnt recognize the hd so i pulled everything out my sys to examine it, when i plugged everything back in, this time i plugged the errant molex into my dvd/cd-rw and once again nothin, being frustrated (and 45min later), it never occured to me to look at the molex. So I had an old WD HD lying around and plugged in, this time using the same molex plug.......and boom! smoke everywhere, thats when it occured to me what happened........ so now im out 3 drives, plus the $250 or so i spent this afternoon on new hardware......oh yeah and most importantly, ive lost 8 years worth of papers ivbe written for school, 12gigs worth of mp3s and by far the most important, my vast porn collection. an even bigger bummer, if you can imagine this, is that data recovery STARTS AT $500 and goes anywhere up to $3000.....The average quote ive recieved for my drive has been in the neighborhood of $800 so now im gonna go cry for not backing up my data like ive been telling myself to do for so long now
yuo could probably get another controller board for the HDDs... If you're lucky, that's all that went boom...
from what i understand sending 12v down the 5v line not only burns the pcb board, but also crashes the head most of the time...theyre somehow directly connected.....i dont know, for all i know these guys that do data recovery are just trying to rip me off....anyways, $800 is too much for mp3s
well, im pretty happy, not to mention excited now that i rembered that i had the 10 gigs of mp3s i listened to most on my ipod...now all i have to do is put em on the new hd.......it took me 2 days to realize it, i relaized while i was working out and listening to me mp3 player, it didnt occur to me yesterday while i was working out.....it was as if i had a ephiany..
Since ppl do HD 'window' mods, you might be able to salvage the platters and put them into another HD... probably tricky though.
unfourtanetly its not that simple...apparently each modeled hd is extremly different, and the second you touch the disk itll corrupt, plus most the time when you fry the pcb the head will crash with it.
