    if i want to run a ftp do i have to have my compuiter to be on?

    You may also have to do a bit of port forwarding if you are using a NAT router if you want the system accessible from the outside world.

    I'd also highly suggest that if you're to set up FTP access for personal use, go with SFTP instead. First, the secure ports are less likely to be blocked by your ISP (so no stupid port forwarding and re-mapping and such), and second, it's secure.
