Another update

Let's see what we have for you today.

First I needed a peice to hold the top part together and to make it a little bit longer:

now to give it some more strength I added metal epoxy:


Mmm, porrige.. I mean hairy filler.. erm I mean glass fiber filler:


Applied to the front:

Don't worry I won't rush the sanding as I know how much you regret it afterwards and also good thing I bought that mask this stuff leaves ALOT of dust everywhere.
Next time: More filler!

 

it's staring to look like your scetchup pics now .........
you could have used countersunk pop rivets then you wouldn't have
to use the amount of glass fiber filler as with the rivets you used.

I actually thought about using it but decided against it when I realised that the metal use is too thin, or atleast the galvanized steel that I use.

This will not be much of an update since the filler is taking some time and is not all that fun to see pictures of I've decided to post some other pictures wich might be more interesting.

I have bought some of these hinges that I might use because they open and stays open and vice versa:


And I have also brought out an old case mod of mine (one of those 1 day mods when you are bored) wich is a miditower to compare it sizewize against this case I'm doing now, as you can see it's pretty small:


I have bought some fine filler now and used it a couple of times but there's still some more work left and since sanding pictures isn't THAT interesting I will just make one update with those pictures later on.

 

Any idea where I could get my hands on one of those cases?

They look like a perfect start to any mod.

 

It was an robot controller for industrial robots, but I guess it's just a industrial type of rackmounted controllers, so I can't really say where you should be able to find them, I got it from someone who works with robots.

WOW that wasn't expected, to be a MOTM nominee is a great honor for me even if I don't win and thank to everyone who has voted for me!

I'm still sanding the the top peice with fine filler.
It was really nice and warm outside so I decided I should do it outside.
Wich was really nice, the dust didn't amost kill me and it was bright, warm and nice.

I started with this and sanded it down:

Now, my dog wanted to sit just where I was and get dust all over herself but once I told her she couldn't be in all the dust she just sat down in the sun (she loves the sun and warmth):


I applied som more filler and panted it fast, just because it helps when you need to see the holes in the filler:



There is still some more filler work to be done, but it's getting there.

Haha I almost forgot, as a reply to the article in MOTM: I may not have a Dremel but atleast I got the clones :


Next time I might have something more interesting, but until then this is all you get

Update

This time I have someting else than just filler.

Donor case:


Almost the same width as the case im building:


I was mostly interested in the PSU part:

Bending, I used a hammer and the vise:


Taping it down to the workmate for dremeling:

As you can see it's a little space left up here and I might be able to put the harddrives here, because of that todays coolers is so large I think there might be some trouble with using the single HDD space in the case:


I also did some sanding but I figured those pics gets kinda boring after a while.

Waterblock

I needed a break from all the sanding so I have started doing another part of the project that I thught I'd never be able to do.

Watercooling! I have always wanted to try and make my own block but I looked all over for copper and aluminium but never found it.
While I was looking around the garage for some tools one day I found this aluminium raiser kinda thing (the thing that connects the steering wheel to the steering rod) and it looked like it could be an awesome watertank.
My quest to find aluminium (since the "tank" is made of alu) started once again and luckely someone that I know could get it for me... for free! yay!
So here is my first attempt ever to make a waterblock without fancy CNCs and stuff like that, Dremel (almost) all the way!

Here is the alu and the "tank" and some push-in fittings that I will use:

I didn't really know what kind of design I wanted so I just did some doodling:


Sawing.. by hand! it didn't as long as I though it would:

Now I dremeled away for quite some time and didn't take any pictures so here it is done:


I know I know it will not be a performance monster but it will be cooler than my air cooler and look alot nicer.

Some rough 240 grit wet sanding (will make it better later):


Marking some makrolon/lexan:

After that I sanded it using this setup:


Tapped and some black hex screws:


The block and the unfinished lexan/makrolon:


Then I started making the gasket out of this rubber sheeting:


Still missing holes for the screws:


Some of the things that I will be using, not top of the line but it will work:




And an update for the sanding, I painted it once again to see whats left and it's some more filler on the top left but not that much:



The next time I will be finishing the block and might start on the res.

 

It's looking good so far, I'm liking the design of the top section and look forward to seeing the whole thing together. That orange looks fantastic, keep it up.

 

I love the work, but you need some more surface area, bro. Google the Krakatoa GPL block and see what you can get from it-there are some great free designs available in there...

KayinBlack: I was going to do a little bit more to the block but all my cutting discs are out so this will have to do right now, also as it looks now this won't be a performance system most likely a server.

 

I think you would do better with another chunk of aluminum for the top of the block. A single 1/4" of polycarbonate isn't much to seat your fittings in. Also, you need to clear out more space for the water to flow through. At least as much area as the inner diameter of the tubing you will use.
