yeah, the lights will be sweet. When I first saw the design render I thought it was real. I was like "why is he building it again if he already made one?" lol.

    +1, good prices, quality LEDs.

:)Now I KNOW you need to embed the LEDs! The clear rods would light up too. Nice find on the red rod, (no good way to say that...) Did it have a smell like bug spray when you were filing it? I'm guessing because it's a rod it was extruded. If you keep the hole saws wet, they make a better looking cut, but it's messy.:D

    Thanks! :)

As a matter of fact, it is a bad render... too splochy

    But thanks anyway :)

The smell that came out of that rod resembles the smell of a PVC tube. And it melts if i use the jigsaw. But no way a PVC would have that finish, so i guess it is polycarbonate.

I've tryied to wet those hole saws with wax and vaseline. But the result is good for the first 2 mm. As i prefer to end without pause, it was of almost no use. As for keeping watered dunno if its a good idea, as the things would become rusty. but if i came into a solution to solve the mess, i can try to make some time...

hmm.. perhaps PetG is the solution....

    Anyway, thanks again!

Polycarb wouldn't melt that easy. It sounds like it was extruded plexi.
The water is messy. I keep a heavy layer of axle grease on my drill press to keep it from getting rusty. I also cover everything with newspaper when I do that kind of stuff. I'd say you cold use antifreeze, but it would be bad if a pet got into it. Sewing machine/gun oil works too.
Stay away from PetG! That's the clear stuff I think I used in Hypnotoad, and it sucks. It melts just trying to drill it.

Aye PetG sux.. I was talking about using it to conform to the drill press and make the things less messy. Never i will use PetG in one of my works.

Looks like the machine oil is the best idea! It won't rust the saws and will help with the cutting! Briliant idea! I'll give it a try...

Well i had a little darwback in this weekend. My "acrylic provider" couldn't provide the red neon acrylic. At least until now. It will take sometime to get it done. Another thing is that I won't be able to cut anyting this weekend because my sis need to study for a test. That means no noise in here :sigh:

Two days lost... Well i guess i'll be playing UT 3 this weekend...

I first saw the design when it was being entered for the Vista Magazine contest and thought "That looks amazing, no way anybody could pull it off well." You've proven me wrong so far, keep it up!!

hmmm But i think it is, in your case, an australian competition. I don't think any project other than autralian was printed on that magazine. It would be sooooo cool otherwise! :)

    Base reinforcement

One of my concerns about the structure is how much it can take in terms of "traction".

First i though in gluing everything, but i want to be able to adjust anything in the base in case i need. So, the best option is to use bolts.

As I know just about anybody read a post lets get into the pictures. :D

I have mouted a little car to help me manipulate the mod
    [IMG]
Not a big deal. Just a wide plank with wheels.

With the help of a carpenter square ruler, i used a scrap piece of wood to serve me as a guide in 90 degrees:

As i have a steady hand like an old man with Parkinson, i clamped the pieces together the best i can:

Then i drilled and used a tap drill for the allen bolt with conical head:

On to another table. I made these little holders to help me acomodate the hole for the bolts:
They where not THAT necessary, but they will help.

Now i have the base with the angled holders and those pieces glued in place:

These pieces are now mounted in place to make the other parts more firm when mounted:

Then I made these other 4 pieces to hold the upper main piece and glued them in place:
The visual polution along with the reflection of the acrylic make the visualization difficult, but take a closer look and you will see that they ARE there! :)

The bolts are a little bigger than the clearence from top to DVD, so, file them!

Using the tap drill after the holes made:

    And voilà!
Look in that picture the piece from the last post. Nice huh?

    Thats all folks!

I am having a little difficult in fiding the red neon acrylic sheet. Untill now the overall structure is a little fragile, soh that internal piece is VERY important to give the base a resistence to traction. I REALLY hope to find that soonish :/

    Cheers fellow modders :)

If i like that so far, perhaps u would like this much more:

I've done that in acrylic, with a dremel and lots of patience. Took me like 3 hours to make. I was planing to make this in Hephaestus, but it simply won't go with the industrial kind of this project.

If u want to see some more details on that sculpture u can see it here.

I am very proud of that sculpture :D

This sculpture was used back in 2005 in this case:
