Thanks yemerich... although your hephaestus is great too!

Frankly, I was abit lazy with modding coz it's high season for beach-volleyball and I prefer being outdoors this times than to fiddle with the htpc.

With Q'n cool it works good but I still haven't found a simple program triggering the fan when it's too hot. The one from gigabyte doesn't work at all.

Well, maybe on Sunday I'll have some time for testing & reporting.

It has still some minor bugs in Mediaportal which have to be solved but TV works great when I look European Soccer Championship. No Temp probs at all.

    thank you man.

    thank you...:D
yes, that is the right translation... :D it's a song from a German punkrockband "Die Ärzte" ( The Docters)

    thank you...

Excellent idea and very well executed. Quick question you mention cooling spray could you send me a link to where you got it from so i can try to located something similar. I quite fancy making a heat sink like this but i don't have the equipment to make it in two halves as you suggested. How tight are the tolerances on this, actually for me being rubbish at even drilling a straight hole, whats the margin for error?

edit: Actually could you substitute the spray for a box of ice and leaving the heat pipe in that for 30 mins to contract?

hey buddies. thanx for voting and all the nice words. just laying in bed with a summer flu not able to do anything.

@timmy_the_ tortoise: the psu? have a look at this. in front you see a pcb which is the dc/dc converter. the dc voltage comes from a psu similar to a notebooks one.

unfortunately, this one is a 90W and the rig (especially the blu ray) has a high power consumption during start. that has a negative side effect of voltage dropping during the start period, so that sometimes the computer wont start. that's not good. so i decided to order a bigger one with 150Watts from morex, which will arrive this weekend as well as a power meter.

I hope that I'm fit at least at the weekend to make the change and an extensive test report.

    so long.

While laying in bed and degusting flowers ;) I thought, that's gonna be time to finish this project.
Today I was fully fit again and so I built in two usb-jacks on the left side oft the pc. I hotglued them in.

Then, this evening was time for a small test and review.

Here , have a look at speedfans temps and cpu-load during Mediaportal is playing TV.

Another screen, taken by camera, coz a screeny isn't possible during blu-ray playback. (AC/DC Live at Donington  )
As you see...cpu-load is around 30-40%. I think ppl who have been there were more "loaded"...;)

Temps are controlled by speedfan now. I decided to let the fan spin around abit. I think it's better for the lifetime of the CPU.
The noise is absolutely not recognizable. So, I'll leave it that way.

Her are two other pic showing the power consumption during TV respectively Bluray playback.

    Well, mates, I'd say:"Finished".

I hope you all enjoyed my little worklog. I thank you all for reading, comments and good hints and of course voting for the MotM May 2008.

I love this Mod.. It's inspired.

I just wish I had the time/money/tools+materials to try a mod of my own.
