barry99705 you're right. I have a laptop DVD drive from a dead computer, and when I'll start working on it you'll see some interesting stuff.

 

I was (and still am) very busy and didn't notice how more than a month goes by without an update...

I cut the plate from the PSU's original metal box, in order to easily attach the PSU pcb to the chassis.

Screwing it in:

The PSU is mounted with screws so it can be replaced (if the need ever arises). Also, at this point I already started cutting the crews down a bit, so that it won't hit the case.

Calling it a 'cage' at this point would be an exaggeration... As it is only meant to hold one drive.

Half the chassis, HD and PSU installed:

The HDD can be pulled out easily, without the need to disassemble any screws. It's my version of a 'screw-less' case
Actually, the drive will be installed reversed, more info on the next update.

Small problem:

The PSU heat sink is in the way of the ATX cable. It's dremel time...

A few minutes work with the dremel and the cable is connected.

dam that box is going to be hot! i am a little worried about the naked power supply tho.

Only if you stick your finger in it when it's plugged in.

 

Well actually, a PSU can kill you even if it's not plugged in (it holds a lot of charge in the large capacitors) if you touch it in the wrong places... but I don't see why you would, so it matters little.

 

I've never tried it, but you'd think there would be a circuit to drain the charge if unplugged. I do know that the heat sinks are charged while plugged in though. No touchy!!

I'm not worried and counting on high air flow through the rear fan. Hope it will be much more clear in future updates.

Well, I don't speak dutch but I think I got the point. As long as the computer will work decently, I'm happy.

I had thought of a possible second HDD, but there's just isn't enough room. I might upgrade to a smaller and better CPU heatsink in the future and think it over again.

Thanks for the concern people, I'm aware of the dangers of an open PSU and wasn't planning on sticking fingers in it while the computer is plugged to the wall and/or working. Either way, there's a big piece of plastic under the PSU pcb, so the chassis (and the whole case) will only be grounded.
As a side note, I managed once to get electrified by a camera flash. Yeah, those little buggers also hold a charge of 220 volts in capacitors. So don't worry, and hopefully I will be able to do a simple test run of the computer this weekend.

 

Hey, I'm still alive and so is the project (sort of). Very tiny update: I'm typing this post on the computer at it's current state (i.e. not finished). The computer is still in the same state (give or take) as seen in the lase pictures I posted, but at least it works . At the moment I have too many things to take care of (and I'll be away from any computer\home for the next week). Might get some progress done tomorrow, but I really really don't promise anything...
