I would suggest getting two monitors. That way you can move them around instead of having just one large monitor taking up a lot of space on your desk.
As for what monitors you should consider buying, take a look at some of the reviews bit-tech has done reciently.

your most likely better off spending your money on a single high quality screen, as big as can get aswell. then use your old screen as a secondary.

considering your in graphic design, colour recreation upon the screen is most important. your old screen can display toolbars.

Getting the best panel is useless if you can't calibrate it though. Seriously invest in a calibration tool.

What you should do is use 2 monitors, basically. All the advice above is quality and can be relied upon.

Personally, I'd be quite tempted by two identical monitors side by side... don't know why, but I get the feeling it would be the most convenient and practical set up, for any situation...

When I was doing a lot of 3d modelling I found a 2nd monitor to be invaluable. Now that I hardly ever do anything productive on my pc, I'm selling my 2nd monitor and putting the money towards a hot new video card.

And then in a few months, I'll almost certainly get annoyed by the lack of a 2nd monitor, and get another one :)
