Dubai is a crazy place Did you guys read about these small artificial islands for like $40m each? lol
They're also planning this: Al Burj - "The Tower" Well over 1km tall, getting on towards the mile high mark. Unbelievable. Looks awesome tho, I want to base my evil organisation (which will of course be ready by the time this is built) in that little top section...
The palm tree ones or the world map ones? I would love to visit Dubai, but I can't stand heat. I guess I'll just have to wait a few years until the decide to build a giant dome over the whole city and air condition it, or some equally crazy scheme...
Unbelievable What's next 300 floors? The Burj Dubai looks impressive, and allthough this thing has a kind of more suttle style, it looks better. Being more than double the size of every tower around it helps the looks aswell GODDAMN
I am just waiting for the over development phase to hit, at which point a lot of these projects will stop.
I can't see Dubai continuing too much longer like this TBH, will the country still be able to sustain itself when the oil runs out (local reserves are pretty small)? As far as I understand it, I think their plan is just to build and build while they can, so that they still have an income (with tourism, business and international transfers - Dubai is Emirates' hub).
That's exactly the plan. They want to turn it into a world-class tourist attraction, then keep that going.
Hand in hand with this is their attempt to become the "London" of the Middle East -- not only as a tourist attraction, but as an important financial center, which would hopefully secure them after oil reserves begin to run low. The last thing they want is for the city to be "returned to the desert" if you catch the imagery.
Their plan better include "Let's not go bust". The credit crunch may seriously curtail their target market's disposable income.
