Hi Guy's just about to upgrade my system and I'm going for Radeon HD 4870

    But which one???

Been looking at Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870 PCS Extreme 512MB but some reviews says it noisey.

It's going in my lounge so I want something not to noisey.

This is what I'm going for...

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHz Guaranteed to run at 3.00GHZ (1333FSB)
    Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870 PCS Extreme 512MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express)
    Asus P5Q-E Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 650W ATX2.2 Modular SLi Compliant PSU
Noctua NH-U12P CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775)
GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Black Dragon EVO ONE DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
    Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache

Must admit really tempted with card thou, from what I read nearly all 4870 are noisey, don't want to change the GPU cooler.

Going to be running HD stuff and games of course, that's why I've gone for a high spec.

Anybody got any experience with 4870's???

    Cheers guys...:D

o_O what on earth is that, and don't pay extra for it for petes sake just buy a normal cheaper Q6600 you have to overclock it either way! The 4870 is noisey cos the cooler is crap (noise and high temps) :p

My 4870 has a nice heatsink, but crap fan - it's small and runs at full pelt all the time. Temps were about 45C under load I think. I unplugged the fan and have literally hung 2x120mm fans under the HS and that's keeping the temps around 48C loaded. They are also always on full speed as they're powered from the PSU.

It's a Force3D version - cheapest on Ebuyer at the time. (Pic is nothing like real card!)

I have decided just to go for the standard Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHz now, it's about £14 cheaper than the other one.

Been look ing at the power colour 4870 card with 1gig of memory £190 all in. I really want a 4870 but all are noisey.

The Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870 PCS Extreme 512MB has a cooler with heatpipes, I thought yippee looks like it's gonna
    be quieter, but It's not.

I've read the 4870 run's hot but with fans at low speeds.

I know in the past HIS brand use to have quieter coolers is that still the case with the 4870??

    What's a t-rad 2?

Been having another look, it's between the powercolour 1gb of the Powercolour 512mb PCS extreme, which doesn't have the stock cooler,
    but still is noisey.

    Only £6 difference in price...:duh:

    They areally arent that noisey.

Just buy o one and the only time you will hear it is when your playing games with a very very quiet computer and no sound on, which is unlikely.

    Get whichever is cheapest.

    QFT.

Mine runs at 80C on idle, but that's because AMD wants to keep it silent. The fan will speed up on load of course.

    Hey look at this guys:
    Welcome, chambochae.

    Been a while...

So I bought the powercolor PCS 512mb last week. I'm really happy with it, and the fan really isn't all that noisy. It IS, if you turn up the speed to 90+ % in something like riva tuner. But the default settings generally never take it above 70% during load, so it's very bearable.

In terms of performance, I'm running a practically ancient 3200+ socket 939 with 1gb of cheapo ram, and am playing far cry at 60fps with everything on max at 1680x1050. Obviously the CPU is a massive bottle neck but I'm waiting for the i7 reviews before committing to LGA775 or the new socket...
