For me as long as drivers have individual points it is a race first and a team sport second. By that logic, Kimi (and everyone else) should be fighting for every point they can possibly get regardless of anyone else's situation. Taking one for the team is not racing If it was up to me I'd make what we saw Ferrari do strictly illegal, and study all the data to ensure that teams can't "fake" a deliberate slowing down of one team car to allow the other through.
I don't remeber McLaren getting disqualified when they played team tactics - I think they even went on to win the title. Hakkinen was let through by Coulthard. It was only when one team did it in such an obvious way (ferrari, usa i beleive) that it became a big issue. And I don't remember any rule changes in this area when mclaren did it - rather being ferrari that triggered the change.
Agreed - without the ability for one driver to help anothers championship, it would be hard for a team owner to pair two great drivers together. And in a way Kimi was helping himself for the next year, as he can't win the championship but if Masa does it helps the team and can directly helps Kimi next year. ALthough I'm not sure which benefits go with which championships (drivers title or constructors).
IIRC Paul DiResta (Mercedes DTM driver) has tested for them / is about to test for them... Where will he end up if they like the look of him? Pedro out on his ear and he becomes test driver, or will they stick him in a Force India car next year if Mallya stumps up the cash for Mercedes engines?
Would love to see Paul driving for them. I always though his cousin Dario would have made it to F1, alas IRL and Indy500 champion will have to do
May be not - http://www.itv-f1.com/news_article.aspx?id=44382 The crux of it all? Engines lasting 3 races rather than 2, cheap engine supply packages for customers, reduced testing & standardised KERS.
How long did engines last back in the 60's? I bet they didn't change a Cossie DFV very often. And if they did, they didn't cost that much! As for lasting an entire season - no problem. Williams-Massey Furguson for 2012?
Max and 'da boys' aren't happy with the Beeb. How dare they employ the rapscallion known as Brundle: http://www.planet-f1.com/story/0,18954,3213_4370401,00.html Besides that - does anyone know of the top of their heads what engine cycle lewis was on in each of his race victories this year? We know it was a new engine last weekend, but what I'm trying to see is if there's any pattern to his placing in each round vs 1st race / 2nd race for the engine. Yes - I'm that bored at work
Joker engines can't be used in the final round of the championship - hence my musing as to what he's done on 2nd race engines.
I wonder what the reasoning behind that rule is, surely it's just punishing whoever hasn't blown an engine yet for reliability at a time when the FIA are bleating on about sustainability etc?
Yeah, I think Lewis still has the spare engine left. EDIT: Did by any chance that rule only come into effect when Ferrari International Assistance noticed that Lewis would have a shiny new engine for the last race?
As much as it's tempting to think that, no - It was agreed by all teams before the season began, according to all the usual sites / sources of info. 01 Melbourne = E1, 1st, Pole 02 Kuala Lumpur = E2, 5th, Q 9th 03 Bahrain = E1, 13th, Q 3rd 04 Catalunya = E2, 3rd, Q 5th 05 Istanbul = E1, 2nd, Q 3rd 06 Monte Carlo = E2, 1st, Q 3rd 07 Montreal = E1, DNF, Q 1st 08 Magny-Cours = E2, 10th, Q 13th 09 Silverstone = E1, 1st, Q 4th 10 Hockenheim = E2, 1st, Pole 11 Budapest = E1, 5th, Pole 12 Valencia = E2, 2nd, Q 2nd 13 Spa-Francorchamps = E1, 3rd, Pole (Penalty) 14 Monza = E2, 7th, Q 15th 15 Singapore = E1, 3rd, Q 2nd 16 Fuji Speedway = E2, 12th, Pole 17 Shanghai = E1, 1st, Pole, Fastest Lap 18 Sao Paulo = E2 (NO JOKER ENGINE) Lewis's gearbox is on it's 3rd race as well.
They just need Heikki a bit more this race imo. He needs to mess around with the Ferraris. Lewis only needs fifth!
Heikki needs to "days of thunder" it. I wonder if there will be a Diesel F1 car at any point? or one running bio-ethanol? Can you imagine the start of the race if someone was in a diesel, everyone is raising the rev's, and the lights go out....and half the grid disappears in the field of soot hehe I did something similar to some poor guy on the M25 the other night, oops.
An electric F1 car would be interesting. With the right tech the acceleration could be epic: http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/07/wrightspeed-x1-electric-now-among-worlds-fastest-cars/ They would need to make sure they have that-little-bit-of-material-that-goes-down-the-back-of-battery-compartments in place (or a biro handy) for quick replacement in pitstops
