Um, no. They're getting paid crazy money for a full front-page takeover ad. Happened with a couple other games too. I think Spore did it briefly, and I know there were at least two other games though can't remember what they were for the life of me. The ad guys have to fix their color profiles though.
happens every couple of months, i miss most of them because i just hang out on the forums and read the articles through the links in the threads. i think it's cool, the full page ads are always well done (ie look great) and they allow bit to make money without resorting to annoying retarded things like intellitxt or ads stuffed in the middle of of a paragraph. iirc, bit had a full page ad like this one on kane&lynch's launch day. without the editorial bias, of course.
The editorial team are left to get on with the job at hand - that's probably going to be even more the case under Dennis as the sales team will not even be in the same office as us. I only saw this on Friday to approve it (and be made aware of it) as Editor, but the other writers are unlikely to have seen it until they wake up this morning. As some of you pointed out, ads are ads and spades are spades... we call the spades regardless of the ads and, yes, a number of advertisers have been upset in the past when we've spaded one of their products Day of Defeat-style. They're reminded that they purchase advertising to influence the readers, not the editors.
I laughed at M$ giving personalized Halo3 "review packages" aka review bribes. I've been gaming for 18yrs and I've seen tons of shady **** in the gaming world from rigged reviews to fanboy trash.
None of which you'll find here... I think they look cool, although the join lines are a bit offputting - are they deliberate, or is it a browser foible?
Doesn't bother me much, if it keeps the site running it's all good to me I think this one is abit cool actually hehe.
It looks awesome, and keeps Bit-Tech running... why not? And yes, I trust Joe's reviews more than I trust GameSpot... (Though IGN is a different story :hides: )
Damn straight. In fact, I've never even been in a situation where I've had to turn down a bribe as I'm pretty clear with PRs about how I'd respond to that. In fact, I think I got final code for RA3 even before the takeover was confirmed and I've not heard from EA about it since. Like we do at bit, I know EA keep PR and marketting totally seperate.
The 2px black borders are deliberate. We've got a slightly different variation on this design coming later in the week
I don't see what all the fuss is. The advertisement looks good, it doesn't personally affect anyone here and if you really don't want to look at it, just change the page as I'm sure everyone does within 10 seconds of getting to the homepage. And heck, it keeps us from paying membership to the forums like a lot of other sites i seen.
