hey...so this is an embarrassing question....where can I download a standalone copy of counter strike? you know, the old one. the really old one. some friends and I are planning on having a little lan party but I don't actually have CS. any ideas where I can get a decent copy that requires nothing else? cheers!
Well, you could try buying a CD copy, but you'd have to patch it up, and iirc you won't be able to access all the servers hosted with the current version on Steam, only ones hosted with the Steam-free version. Tbh, just bite the bullet. $10+taxes gives you a game which is easily accessible with a massive wad of servers.
Do you mean super old school, as in v1.0 or v1.5, or are you okay with v1.6? If you want 1.6, Steam is the way to go. If not, you should be able to pick up an older version for less than US$5 on Amazon. Google hints at free mod version downloads if you already have Half-Life (search for "Counter Strike 1.5"). If you get 1.5, you won't be able to play online (i.e., over the internet), but LAN should work without any problems. It may be worth checking out Steamless CS.
if its only to play at a lan then you could find an old pre steam version like the link below and just install it on all the pc's and game away http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Half-life-Gen...14&_trkparms=72:1297|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318
I've got CS 1.1, it's 85megs. I'll upload it later if anybody wants it. (Also got PODbot which is nice for padding out a LAN server with (pretty useless) bots)
You can play any version of CS, just google for links to dl the patches not sure about dling a version of the game but you just need someone to host a lan game and you then all connect to that PC, if you all have the same version it should work.
cheers guys! it's purely for LAN purposes, nothing more. and tbh, any version is good, so long as it works ok-ish! indetikit, could you upload CS 1.6? I would much appreciate it!
CS 1.1 installer http://www.crushed-core.com/bit-tech/HL_CS_V11M_FULL.EXE I haven't tried installing it with a Steam HL1 install yet, so it might work, it might not YMMV!
