So we were using the internet all good and dandy yesterday, when it suddenly stopped and went very, very slowly for web browsing...MSN, POP, PS3, etc all worked fine for the next 24hrs (only came back this afternoon). We have fibre and live in a new apartement block.

Dad had a good shout at us kids for wrecking the internet with whatever we'd done (nothing new there!). I had a go at the modem etc and it al appeared OK.

Well it was in the papers this morning that someone has cut through another cable in the mediterranean sea piping the internet for the Gulf! (we're in Abu Dhabi)

Anyone else had to give weird excuses to parents for why the internet's suddenly stopped?

    Nope...

I did get blamed for breaking the home computer once, though. (This was back when one computer was nice. Many people didn't have one, and could live very well without)

I was playing a game online, and the computer crashed. When I restarted it, i just got a message saying "operating system missing".

Anyone remember the IBM "deathstar"? :duh:

What they get for routing bloody cables by one of the busiest ports in the med from my understanding of where they are placed or run.

How exactly do the cables get cut? I understand they are laying on the ocean floor... but it's not like boats are dredging or dragging anchors when they make sea crossings, right?? And it's not like boats just run aground on top of the cable. What exactly causes these cuttings? (Besides ninjas)

Thats why it took 3 days to get my emails. I sent them on friday and only got them on monday. Someone clogged up the internet.

Remember kids: The internet is not a big truck. It's a series of tubes.

Well in egypt the submarine cables go in through Alexandrea which happens to be one of the meds busiest ports and cause under the sea there not covered all it takes is an achor, but could be many reasons for them snapping.

Great comment...quality use of bandwidth there!

It seems select websites are not working at all...the essential ones - facebook, youtube, and msn!

bit-tech is working at full speed though :D

Gargh this is gonna be very annoying indeed, we're stuck with local tv now :(
