News Seagate unveils first Barracuda 7200.12 hard drive

CES 2009: Seagate has released its two-platter Barracuda 7200.12 1TB hard drive, pushing platter densities to a massive 500GB.

 

man, I hate Seagate but I might have to pick up one of their HDDs when I build a new desktop..

2TB disk just means all that more data lost if it dies.. and if you want to raid it together, raid1 or raid6 are your only real options, and even then, raid6 could fail you. See http://blogs.zdnet.com/storage/?p=162

 

you must only use 1.44MB floppies, right? higher density disks are a good thing, you've got to follow a proper backup plan no matter what size disk you use. and no, raid is not a backup plan.

 

According to WIKI the 3.5" drive can take 5 patters, so thats 2.5TB .... I WANT IT NOW!! probably will have to wait 2 years!

And if your 1TB drive fails, then you've lost 1TB of data. And if you lose your 1GB USB key, you've lost 1GB of data.

I, for one, can't wait for a 2TB drive. I currently have about 3TB of storage over 4 drives (320+750+750+1T) and I'd quite like more but only have four drives. I suppose I could wedge a fifth in place in the bay meant for a second optical drive, but whatever. Problem is that it's hard to find duplicates, and when found, determine what's a backup copy and what's just cruft.

Anyway, i'd really like the 2T model. If i can wait long enough, i think i'll pick two up for RAID 0. I really dont care for data integrity for bulk, i'm prepared to loose most of it. The parts that i really really do not want to lose are on disks and on two other PCs.

 

On top of that comment.. How many people are seriously going to consider a 12TiB array from 2TB disks? So far as enthusiast users with a few 2TB disks are concerned, it's nothing but FUD.

 

That's great news, I need another hard drive so one of these will be great if its better performance with lower noise from fewer platters.

Be interesting to see what the makeup of that 750GB drive will be, maybe a 1 terabyte drive with a lot of bad sectors.

 

Balls, I've just received 2 of those 1TB Samsung drives reviewed the other week. If these 2 platter 1TB Seagates are a similar price to the Samsungs I may get them exchanged.

It seems mechanical drives just don't want SSD to catch up, pushing the limits of memory will only get them so far. Eventually they´ll all be used for mirrored arrays.

 

Any word on when we can buy those drive?
