Scratch Build – Complete Cygnus X1.

i can't believe you're completely covering up the structure
that is why i loved it so much!

keep the angled modern look please for the sake of all the time you spent on it!

Cygnus X1

A "Rush" reference?

 

I'll mark each update in the title by post number from now on.

A Galactic reference.



As it turned out it was over 40 degrees here today (and god knows how hot in the sun),
and as wood cutting must be done in the sun no work was done modeling the shell.
But there is plenty to do, and in the afternoon with shade in front of my workshop I could
work on the drive side cover.

I'm making a cover here because the drives and their wiring is just too ugly. But care needs
to be taken because I don't want to lose the functional, machine like look of this area.


The spacers that are available to me are not long enough.



But it's a simple matter of joining two together to get the required length.
Some 3mm screws are cut down to make studs.



And then the thread is locked with this stuff.



And now the correct length.



I made four, though not sure how many will be needed.



Then the cover was marked up in 1.6mm sheet.



Cut and filed.



And bent.





And it looks like this on the chassis.





And with some mesh taped in (and a lump of alu on top to hold it).







It's still a bit too clean but fittings to hold the mesh and the cover should give it back
an edge. Also the front part has been left open to show fittings, edges, spacers etc to
keep it machine like and "busy".

Looks great! I agree, it will look even better with some more hardware showing (nuts and bolts hardware, i mean)

and am I the only one who wants to make a joke about the nutlock?

 

Very nice.I wound prefer the look as it is now without any wood or other cover except clear acrylic maybe.Keep on going.

Nice cover. You could sneak some red LEDs in there for a nice StarTrek look.
Quality scratch building is almost never cheap, unless you do a junk salvage build, or have the materials fall into your lap.

Finished up the drive cover, a lot more work than it looks.

 

It's been said before and will be said again I'm sure... That looks perfect nude. You could say Done, and no one would argue... well someone might, this is the internet after all...

The dichotomy of the interior and the exterior shell as I understand your description will be controversial (yet supportive, ain't BT great!) around here. Can't wait to see the unveiling of the veil, so to speak.

The work you did made a huge difference in comparison to the last update... and the last update was slick! Love the bolts... are those acorn nuts I see?

 

i have to say that i was on the build a shell side of the fence! but now i have swapped sides!! everytime something new is bolted on to the case it looks closer and closer to becoming finished. what i mean is that with adding the mesh it looks like you are building the shell into the frame a bit like a house! bit by bit the outer shell is coming together.

as the design stands it looks perfect. if you were to carry on the mesh theme then you wont need a shell!

 

That last bit, the 'HDD cover' is real nice, although I could say a few too many bolts/whatevers were put in.

This is real nice so far though!
Also, I'm not a fan of the three big ridges you placed in front of the fans a while back, something more subtle would suit it better.

I need to stress that all that you see will not vanish once a body is put on, perhaps
it's better to think of a nice surprise every time the shell is popped.
Yes mm, we call em dome nuts, I put em on the outside because it didn't look like
there was enough room (the hard drive ). But on closer inspection there is just enough
space, so I flipped them around.
Yes Oreon, there are still a few parts to make before the second (and hopefully last)
trip to the anodisers.





I'm very happy with this cover, I thought it may change the shape of the chassis too much
but it just makes it chunkier.



The front is pretty much finished except for the shell locking bracket, so time to tidy the fan cables.



Just using some sleeve left over from the last project. Some connectors and extensions
were soldered on here.



Not hidden but tidy. Will be even less visible when the DVD drive is in.

 

It blends in quite well, I think it looks good.
