Symantec Norton 2009 (make sure it's 2009, anything else is shite!)
    Kaspersky
    Eset NOD32

Those are payware, the free ones are usually pretty bad, so I can't recommend them.

Remember that nothing will protect you 100%, and the thing that will protect you best is common sense.

Also, UAC on Vista is really useful against malware, have it enabled.

I run my computer completely on freeware :thumb:
Also, IMO Kaspersky isn't worth it.
And yes, if going the Norton route it has to be 09 realistically.
    Never seen/used NOD32.

I use AVG8 Free, as I'm a personal fan of it. Other free ones are Avast and Avira.

Malware wise, I use Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, as far as I'm concerned it's the best anti-malware there is (though not proactive resident shield type unless you go for the pro version).

Also, don't be silly on the internet ;)

Ultimately it's up to ease of use, wallet size, or personal preference.

Why isn't Kaspersky worth it in your opinion?

NOD32 is one of the most respected AV's out there.

I run with no AV and only with the Windows firewall. UAC is also turned on, and sometimes I run the Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, which is a freeware on-demand only scanner.

I'm using NOD32 v2.70 and I'm fond of it. The new 3.0 version isn't as good. Kaspersky is good too, although they've dumbed down the interface in recent years.

I never thought I'd say anything positive about Norton AV, but yes, the new 2009 version actually seems to be decent. Also, as mentioned before, Avira gets pretty good reviews.

I used to recommend AVG Free to people, but that's ended now. AVG just isn't up to scrap any longer. Avast! never has been, and BitDefender really isn't that good either.

I'd have to say, if I should recommend a free AV solution I'd go for Avira, even though it's constantly nagging you to buy the full version.

For other tools against spyware, I'm still using SpyBot and SpywareBlaster. Another must-have would be ThreatFire. For a software firewall I'd probably recommend the free version of Online Armor, although using NAT through a router is recommended.

Go to the installation folder of Avira.

    Delete the file called avnotify.exe.

Create a new folder and call it avnotify.exe.

    ;)

That's hardly a reason. Opinions are like arseholes.

On the evidence, Kaspersky is in the top 5.

I think Norton 2009 is probably the best AV for novices as it stops most un-technically-minded from ruining their computers, however AVG for me is fine, the free edition works fine, although i'm not sure I'd trust it if I were running a business.

Free Anti-Virus / Firewalls / Anti-Malware aren't bad, it just means that they chose to make there product 100% free to the public as all SAFETY should be.

Comodo Antivirus / Firewall are by far the best FREE option you could get.

I am now going to change to Avira Anti-Virus.

    +1 to you sir.

Of all the AV I tested in my old company I found Nod32 to be very good.
Far better than AVG for sure.

Was a while ago now though.

I think the most sensible post was the one suggesting common sense.
Running .exe files from untrusted sources is error #1.
Keep your machine patched as well as all software on it.
Secunia's PSI is an excellent bit of software that scans your machine and tells you which software is installed that isn't up to date.

Virtualising or sandboxing your browser is also a great way to stay safer. :)
Firefox over IE will make a big difference, especially with the noscript addon.

Yep, eset.com, and I must stress that it was only the AV NOD32 I used, not the all-in-one protection suite they've released. :)

I'm currently running AVG8 Free, plus the "PCGuard" AV/firewall software provided by my ISP (Virgin)

In the past I've also used "Spybot S&D" and ZoneAlarm without any major problems

I'm using the full ESET Security Suite and have found it a dream to use and a nice low footprint. Would certainly recommend it.

With regards to the freeware, i'd also not recommend it. They throw up alot of false positives as shown above ^.

The one thing i'd pose to you, If the free one's are great then why do they offer an alternative you can purchase?
