Hi, I was going to get a 1/4" tap from eBay when I noticed it wouldn't be that easy to just get one but they seem to have 18, 20 or 28 "tpi" (Teeth per inch?) I just want to know wich is the standard "tpi" used for fittings when watercooling, every fitting is just specified as 1/4" so any help would be nice. Thanks. /nismo
A 1/4" BSPP thread will have 19 threads per inch ( a pitch of 1.337mm ). I think WC fittings (G1/4") should be BSPP. IIRC, it's an 11.6mm pilot hole (7/16"?).
Thanks for all the answrs but I still don't really know what to buy I can't find any with G1/4" or 19tpi. Would a tap like this for example work? http://tinyurl.com/d2junb (1/4 - 20 Tap) The ones I find is: 1/4 - 18 1/4 - 20 1/4 - 28 So wich one is it? I'm lost
No, that wont work. That is a regular 1/4" tap. For watercooling it is a pipe thread tap. Pipe thread is different than screw thread. For pipe taps the most common 1/4" ones are 1/4" NPT or 1/4" BSPP. 1/4" BSPP is what you want. If 1/4" BSP is the same as 1/4" BSPP then this is what you want http://cgi.ebay.com/SET-OF-1-4-BSP-...hash=item260345171895&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177 or part number 8328A22 at http://www.mcmaster.com Local plumbing type stores should have them.
You should check out Paul's Thread and barbs guide on coolercases.co.uk, should have the answer to this and any other questions you have about W/C thread sizes
