Hello all! Long time no see. :)

Anyways, I picked up FEAR once again (my last save was in September!). Ive been playing it with about 10-15FPS @ 800x600. I dont know why its so low, I dont remember it being THIS low before. Sometimes it dips to 5FPS. Here is my system

    nVidia 6600 512MB
    AMD 64 2.6GHz
    Patriot 4GB 6400

Basically, I lost my job, getting unemployment, and I have a LOT of free time. I need something CHEAP that will be better than my 6600.

On Newegg there are some off brand 7 series and 8 series video cards for about $40.

Is there any cheap video card that you guys recommend? ANYTHING that will be better than my current card!

just hunt on ebay for 8800 series nvidia, or if your really pushed a 7600GS/GT would be an improvement.

Nvidia's 7600GT was just as fast in most games at the time as a 6800GT. Also might i note that a 7800/7900 could be grabbed for little money.

Off topic, is it wise to sit around playing games, when you could be looking for a job. I dont mean to bust your chops about it, but get a little more proactive! lol!

Whats your budget for the card, you might be surprised at how cheap ATI's lastest graphics cards are.

Oh and avoid the Nvidia 8600 cards like a mother in law, there horridly slow!

Throw up the links to the newegg cards you found and we'll help you pick one

Agreed on the ATI 46xx series, go for those if you can stretch. Otherwise hunt for deals on an 8800 or 7900.

On the ATI side, 2nd hand 3850s and 2900XT's can be right up your alley aswell i think...

A 2nd hand 7800gt should be able to be found for as little as £15-£20 if you keep hunting around on ebay. You shouldn't have a problem finding an 8800 cheap either and you can sell the 6600 for a bit once your done with it, so the upgrade shouldn't cost you too much if you do a good job of listing your 6600.

    agreed.

    ones to look out for...

7900GS (improved core over the 7900GT, fewer shaders, but much more overclocking headroom - i used to have two of these)
7950GT (loads on ebay, less than £50 and you're onto a winner)
X1950 Pro (basically same performance as a 7900GS, but obviously the ATI flavour)
8800GT 256MB (not as good as the 512MB, but a LOT cheaper)
8800GTX (you might even find a cheapo one of these on ebay if you search around, still a good card IMHO)

on the lower end of things...

    9600GT
    7800GTX
    7600GT

All good cards, if you see ANY of these for less than £40-50 you're onto a winner

Thanks so much. Ill really look into the 7800. I remember that was top of the line when I stopped playing with PC's.

Im going to look into those cards, but anyone got some recommendations for ATi? Real big fan of their cards  Ive had a 9200SE (classic!), X700, and X1600.

    ... i love quoting myself :D

Also, i hope your signature is even more outdated then your rig, because an AGP card will be hard to find...

    You  !!
Thanks! Im bidding on a 2900 on eBay. Ill see what ends up happening.

Yeah my sig is pretty old. I think I made it in '05 when I joined up. That was one solid system though! The mobo failed on me, I have an extra socket A mobo. Ill try to fix it.

just a quick note about the ati cards of that age, in that they ran pretty hot and the coolers were often a bit on the noisy side. Something like an 8800gs (same as a 9600gso) would be an awesome cool running and relatively low power card if you can find one within your budget. They also overclock really well so you can get a lot more performance even on stock cooling. I upgraded from a 7800gt to a 9600gso and the difference was pretty big.

EDIT: you can pick up an 8800gs new on ebay for £60 buy it now so no doubt there will be some that go for under £50 on auction.

I was checking for a cheap but decent videocard to get for my brother's Bday and realized that the HD4670 is much better than I expected. For just about 110$ it is in par with a 9600GT, which is quite impressive

if your a nvidia person, go for a 8800 GT. The GTS is crap. Another good one is the 9800GT or 280GTX. The 9800 is really just a rebranded 8800GT, but there was a model out for a short time that had some different specs.

If your an ATI person, get a pair of HD4670's.

    i'd go ATI 4830
...doesn't 9600GT beat 7900GTX? if not then tomshardware gpu charts are dead wrong

The guy is on an extreme tight budget hence most cards newer than his 6600 is going to perform well, so anything like the 9 series and GTX200 series is far beyond his budget. This is why alot of use recommended the 7 series and low end 8800's due to there prices.

And a pair of HD4670's on a non crossfire motherboard is plain wrong, and shows you didn't take the time to read the thread and post some helpful infomation.

A single 4670 would be fine, but its still a tad too much to pay considering the second hand pricing on 8800's which would cream a 4670 i believe.

No it isn't. The 512MB is faster than the 8800GT you recommend and the older G80 ones really weren't that bad, certainly would be faster than a lot of the cards that have been recommended.

I'm pretty sure the 9600GT is at least as good as my 7950GX2, so what Denis said.

I bought a 8800GTS on Ebay for $35usd I use it for PhysX

I also bought a 9800GTX for $90usd on ebay also - its within 7fps of a $300 card in most games
