My friend really wants a 4870X2 after seeing how wee it preformed on Crysis, the problem is he has a 600W PSU and ATI recommends a 650W or greater. Will there be any conflicts if he purchase the GPU and powers it with a 600W Powersupply?

    PSU Specs:
    +3.3V@36A, +5V@30A, +12V1@18A, +12V2@18A, +12V3@18A,
    +12V4@18A ,-12V@0.5A, +5VSB@3.0A

My friend is running an OC'd quad and a 4870X2 on a HX620, works absolutely fine. It could start struggling if he added a second card, though. :)

Good link 007. The graph shows the 4870x2 using aprox. 450 watts under load. Take into account the cpu and all the other goodies in the system and there could potentially be problems. There are many good deals on newegg for psu's. Up to you of course still, but if that was me i would do some more research.

Not all PSU's are rated the same. Thus there is no real comparison.

I have a 510 watt PSU that would run that just fine. The higher wattage advertised PSU you get just gives you more of a finagle factor if you don't know how to figure out your own power draw.

The owner of the local computer store has

    i7 920
    2x GTX 295
    6 HDDs
    3 opticals
    12 Gbs RAM
    X-Fi
    Raid card

    all running off a 750

So I would assume if its a Quality PSU you should be fine.

The 4870X2 has a TDP of around 270 watts, so you will potentially need over 22 amps to be on the safe side. Your friend's PSU only has 18 amp rails, so unless the PSU uses 2 rails for PCI-E connections, you may have to use a Molex to PCI Express Adapter.

I'm running a pair of 4870x2s on a PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750. Currently benching this morning, and no issues.

Try FurMark, and remember to rename the EXE to something that is not FurMark.exe and that has a CF profile and is OpenGL, such as etqw.exe.

Why? Because ATI drivers slow down the GPU when running FurMark.exe to protect the card (the VRM's on the 4870 overheat!).

Also, FurMark.exe doesn't have a CF profile, but etqw.exe (Enemy Territory: Quake Wars) has, and they are both OpenGL so there shouldn't be any problems.

Oh, and also run Intel Burn Test or at least Prime95 while stressing to max the power needed to run it. :)
