    A HDD drive can be mounted in pretty much any direction you wish, it shocks from being dropped or banged that causes problems.

    Even then it takes a pretty good bump to cause damage.

    It is best to orient a hdd in the same way that you did to format it...

    This was necessary for ancient, first-generation drives which used stepper motors for head tracking. Modern voice-coil drives aren't affected by orientation at all.

    oh no, i turned my hard drive on its side and all my data fell off its platters!!!

    ROFL!!!!
