    I'm looking to get a 17" TFT/LCD

First off TFT or LCD and what is the noticable difference between the two? I seem to see that a lot of stores tend to write the description as 17" TFT LCD which I am sure can't be right.... can it?

I plan to use it for gaiming at LANs so I need a fast one. It will be a secondary monitor to my crt at home so I'm thinking mid range 17" TFT should do the job.

I want it to be quite thin, not bulky and not beige.

So far I have had my eye on a Sony X72 in silver

    http://www.dabs.com/products/prod-info3-info.asp?&m=y&quicklinx=255B

I know Sony make good CRT's but I don't really know much about the flat panel market so I was looking at brands I knew were good for CRT's.

Any help would be warmly recieved.

get the samsung 181T or 172T ... both digital LCDs ... silver too.

    TFT - thin film transistor
    LCD - Liquid Crystal Display

and the monitors are called TFT LCDs dunno why ... you should prolly ask zapwizard or someone abt that

The samsung are more expensive, but they are of much higher quality as far as I can see. the display is clean and crisp on the samsung.

I too have been looking for a decent, yet reasonably priced 17" TFT. The Samsung 172T certainly looks very good. Anybody know how much these go for in the UK? I can't seem to find an online UK supplier for this particular model.
I have also been seriously considering this model.... AG Neovo X174. Again, a very good spec, and sexy as hell. Includes D-sub, DVI and S-video in too. http://www.agneovo.com/products/X-174.htm

I think the Samsung 172T is around £550 range....

    Really nice...

Are you looking to buy from a shop or from an online store ?

Shop or online, dunno - have to decide on the model first!!:D
I can get the AG Neovo for £499 +VAT, so need to find more on the pricing of the Samsung. I must admit, The AG having the S-vid in is quite attractive, for setting up linked up x-boxes with my mate - one TV, one LCD.

I have checked out all the LCDs I could and I have found that Samsung are the best, and the only ones that come even close in quality are Viewsonic ones....

Hmmm.... It seems as though the Samsung 172T is a non-UK model. (could explain why I can't find it anywhere). It's on the Samsung USA website, but not the UK one. This means that the only one with the top specs 250 cd/m, 500:1, 25ms, 170/170 etc. is the 181T. Trouble is, that's even more expensive.

Samsung and sharp make the best LCDs.

The sonys aren't actually so hot, using the inferior LG panels. There are not actually many companies that actually MAKE LCD panels, as it is an extremely difficult process.

Samsungs are good. Apparently the Hercules ones are good also, and look pretty cool.

Still, not a patch on a CRT though...

Yeah, I already have a very nice 19" Sony CRT. Trouble is, it's having to go to a new home, so I am looking for the best LCD I can find and afford. The good news is that I was talking to one of my suppliers today, and as a personal favour he is willing to let me have a 181T at cost price. I will find out next week just how much that is.

Main reason for TFT buying is Lannage ;)

    Simkna, lucky devil.

After doing some research I found out that the Samsung range was getting all the best reviews. Infact the reviewer of the 172T even said that it was better than the Mac cinema display. I can't wait to get it. Digiuk should be shipping it to me in the next two weeks so I'll let you know when I get it. Shame they didn't have any in stock (nowhere did) because I am going to a lan in 7 days :D w00t
