So like 2 weeks ago, I was tearing into some Locust's on Gears of War when *pop* my bass decided to fry itself Well... whataya gonna do??? So I likes to watch me some movies. My family likes to watch us some movies. Why not replace our current media center PC with a custom case?? Why not make a custom case from my blown bass speaker?? So thats what I'm gonna do **Excuse my language, I'm English, but I only speak bad English So anyway... here is the current media PC. I'll get the specs later when I transfer the hardware across. And the media center to be... Check that heat sink!! Opening her up The guts Some more guts And finally, the rear plate I hope to reuse I hope to get more done today and at least get her cleared out and hardware locations planned.
Any chance of using the old tube as some kind of wind tunnel for ventilation? Will definitely follow, like the idea.
Quick Update @perplekks45 I've cut most of the tubing out and I'm going to use it for attaching an 80mm fan to draw air in to the case. Inside mostly gutted and tubing cut down to more appropriate size: This is why parents don't help Front grill removed As she stands now... Cleaned out and stripped
The opening is 185mm. I'm hoping I can get a fan that size, but otherwise a 250mm will fit within the dimensions of the case with a little playing
Did you try if the part that fried was the amp or the speaker itself? Might want to save one or the other for some future use...
@Volund: Thanks. That might be usable. I'm hoping to get a 240mm off a friend. Free always wins. I pretty much have 0 budget. But anyway, small update: First round of sanding on the filler around the speaker hole, the next coat of filler is setting right now. The inside of the tunnel. Unfortunately, I don't have files so I made do with a box cutter but now the tunnel is clean... so this picture is kinda out of date. 80mm Fan sat on top of the tunnel for sizing options. Fan sat below tunnel, I just have to figure a way of mounting it.
Ok. So this idea may not work. The rear of the box has an opening that is only 250mm wide, the mobo is 310mm on the back. This poses a couple of questions. Do I rebuild this box from scratch and salvage pieces from this? Or do I put the donor mobo in sideways and just run cables into the back of the case? We only use the USB ports and speaker connection on the mobo and the DVI connector on the AGP card
Nice project, what are your ideas for the sub? Can you manage to put an amp to it or just change the mosfets that fried?
@Gunter: I'm just gonna keep the sub till I find an amp and something to use it with. And I decided... what the hell. I'm gonna start from scratch... So heres the new plan. From the outside it's going to look just like the original, only a little larger. I'm going to put a 220mm fan in the front and then have a dividing wall that will separate the mobo from the drives and psu: I'm going to try and salvage the tubing from the original box to locate right over the cpu with a fan taking all the heat out. On the other side, I'm going house the hard drives (3 right now, 2 more on the way) the dvd drive and psu. On the back on this side i'm going to separate two 140mm with the dvd drive. We rarely use the dvd drive so its there only for necessities and can be kept out of the way. I'll attempt more sketches later, or just get on with with build lol.
