    Hi !

I recently bought an Asus 22" wide screen to change my old Dell 15" but the second output of my graphic card is damaged so I can't use it. That's why I want to reuse it like a "Side screen" on my (old) PC (Dell Dimension 5000 .. erk)

Here is the case : (already modded (my first mod ever :D ))

And the screen which is incredibly durty, isn't it ?

    PSU and screen controller :

    I added a longer power input :

I'm actually searching a LVDS 20-pin cable to change the one which is actually plugged-in because it is too short (about 3 inches) and I need a longer one (about 8 or 9 inches).

Dells are really easy to mod with. The plastic is just for show and the bottom buttons are held on by the small ribbon cable.

Side panel mod, test bench mod, or get stupid and do this:

Really hack off the apple peeps.
I love Dell 15s, built like a brick, interchangeable like a Chevy.

    Nice small monitor.

Put it in the side panel door, I'll search for a long LVDS cable for you.

    Thanks ry@an !
Haha ! I love your iMac hack ;)

    > ry@an : I will cut the metal structure to fix the LCD panel on the side of my PC case.
    > john : I agree, 15" Dell are BIG bricks and easy to disassemble. Thank you for the LVDS cable !

Just a question : Why does small lcd kits (8.4" or smaller) are more expensive than a real 15" LCD screen with VGA and DVI ?

    Bye !

I also modded the big metal block to fix the lcd panel to the side :

Need to cut on the black line :

:nono: NEVER :nono: buy this dremel (Maxicraft) disks are bad quality :

Assembled with the LCD panel :

After drilling all the rivets, I can open the left side :

    To do :
    - Find a LVDS 20-pin (thank you john).
    - Make the OSD buttons cable and the inverter cables longer.
    - Adapt the plastic to fit with my case.

    Comments are welcome !

    Bye !

Today I extended some cable : backlight inverter (2*2), control buttons to the board (8) and finally the LVDS cable ! (20) Which was too short, of course, so I've re-extended it another time grrrrr....

    Here are pics :

Sweet! Nice work! I've been wanting to do something similar for a while, but have been diverted. I also have an old monitor with the normal IEC power cable (as opposed to the ones with the power brick and unique cables.) My thought was to not have 2 power plugs, but rather take power directly from the PSU's input by tapping into it by soldering a long thick gauged set of 3 cables to the power inputs for the LCD.

How are you connecting the signal (video) cables? Are you going out and then in again from the graphics card, or did you figure out some way to tap it internally. I really want to keep the cables internal and not show it.

    Thank you !
The VGA cable is actually going out and is plugged to the board (on the top of the case) but I think I'll make something to hide it. I will take power from the power brick of the PSU too.

    Bye !

    Thanks,
If I understand, you want to solder wires between a LVDS 20 pin connector to a VGA connector ?
I'm not sure it's possible but here is the VGA pinout.
Maybe you can find the LVDS 20 pin one and see if it's possible.
I used the original board to transform the signal between VGA to LVDS so I don't know.
    Sorry.

Not bad at all. You've somewhat inspired me to get off me lazy bottom and put an NEC Multisync LCD1860NX into my HAF...
