We're going to be in London next week for a week. Where should we eat? We'll be staying near Victoria Station.
Avoid the cafeteria at Eton! Rumour has it they had/have a bit of a Pork problem! Eton probably isn't even in London but I haven't poked Mankz for a while. What do I know. I'm dying in Denver with the heat. john
Boxwood Cafe is nice. They do a good set lunch-time menu for fairly cheap, but it's also very fancy inside and one of Gordon Ramsay's resturants. Very nice place and not too expensive.
i due amici Went there a few weeks ago and excellent food is served at a good price (especially for London). The manager is Italian and would do anything for you. If the weather is good sit in the courtyard at the back - nice and colourful. Mainly for lunches but you can get dinner sized portions. Not quite in Victoria but its only a 10 minute walk across Vauxhall bridge. You also get to pass the magnificent Oval cricket stadium on the way.
Thanks again, I'll keep all this in mind! Is UK "steak" equivalent to US steak? I've been warned that British steaks are boiled. *shrugs* Probably won't eat much red meat there if I can help it.
Boiled? You can boil steak? Steak is steak but I think you will find the US version is bigger. Here the more you pay the better it is, generally. Buffalo steak rocks, shame you can't get them here (or am I not looking properly?).
phew, that's a relief. Never had buffalo meat. It's relatively hard to find around here as well. There are a few meats I want to try - buffalo, ostrich, and I think there was one more. Small portions are okay with me. I've also been warned by numerous people that it might be hard to find a good breakfast. I hope they're exagerrating. The trip is in 6 days!
We've had discussions on the forum about food differences before. The UK types have a thing called Full English or Full Irish Breakfast which seems to be close to ours. It might be hard to find a good smothered Breakfast burrito though. Heck, it's hard to get a good burrito in Iowa. Hike off to your local Whole Oats or Sunflower market for single serving size portions of Buffalo, Ostrich, and other healthy(?) meats. Enjoy your trip and remember Bit-Tech Rule #2 - Pics Or It Didn't Happen! john
I've been told to Sophie's Steak House in Covent Garden is a great place to go for some steak, not had the chance yet myself though
Christ no! Guachos is Argentinian anyway. Breakfast, the only option as said is a full english. Bacon, sausage, egg, mushrooms, black pudding, baked beans, fried tomato, some toast on the side and a cup of tea. Yum!
Do you honestly think that will go down well? Remember 51st State, Samuel Jackson "What the f*** is that?"
I'll keep my eye open for decent breakfast joints, but am pretty flexible. I'll bring some breakfast bars as snacks anyways, just in case. lol, I've been part of the bit-tech community long enough to know to stay away from those dishes!
You have to try them, a nice baked bean juice soaked black pudding is amazing, and haggis with mashed turnip / potato and gravy has to by in my top 5 best dishes.
If you'll be touristing around Camden there's a great burger bar called "The Diner". A bit of a sample of what an over-the-top US restaurant is like over here. Awesome food though.
Are we still in 1942? Where to eat? Believe it or not we have restaurants in the UK. http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=e...ondon&btnG=Search&meta=cr=countryUK|countryGB Steak in a good decent restaurant in the UK is far better than the US. Over here we appreciate depth of flavour not half a cow slung onto our plate. Take a trip to the Ace Cafe if you like your cars.
Meat & Wine Co > Gaucho Meat AND wine, not even a hint of any attempt to disguise what the place does with a fancy name!! If you're going to be around Victoria, my main advice is to no be drawn in to going to the Shakespeare for a pint, it is a truely awful pub!
