    I vote for skipping an actual latching mechanism in favor of a few magnets embedded into the areas where the side and front panels (will) meet.

    +1. Magnets would be uncluttered and firm.

    Just think carefully about positioning re. nearby hard drives.

    You could use very strong Neodymium magnets if you wanted although you would never get it open without a crowbar. HDDs are not affected by magnets much, they are shielded and have powerful magnets in them anyway. The only danger is a changing magnetic field, so don't move a strong magnet quickly by a HDD.

    The pics with the doors open and the Alu chassis look positively Bang and Olufsen like Beolab. That's a good thing. High end audio as art - high end computer as art. Good comparison I think. Skill, workmanship, design, all spot on.

    Mod on. :rock:

    Thank you. :)

    Thanks Colossous. :thumb:

    Thanks, see below for reply.

    Thanks, I've been a big fan of B&O stuff since the 70's. :D

    Thanks MM. :thumb::)

    The magnets are a nice, simple idea, and under different circumstances would be
    ideal. But there's a problem in this case.
    A few posts ago I remember saying (upon completing the first hinge and mounting
    the right side panel) that "there is no flex in the back plate". And this is true, the frame that supports the MB and drive plates gives plenty of strength to the back
    plate ON THIS SIDE. But this assembly is off center, and while it gives plenty of
    support to the right hand side of the back plate, there is little support for the other
    side. So when the left hand side panel is perpendicular to the back plate, flex is
    apparent. It's very small to be sure, but I don't have to measure it, I can see it. To
    remedy this, support needs to be provided at the front to take the load off the back
    plate when the case is closed up ( which is almost all the time).

    So this is the idea.

    The completed part.

    There will be two small "L" brackets fitted inside the panels to rest on the two
    platforms when they are closed. A single screw will secure each side.

    [IMG]

    This bracket is mounted using existing hardware (no new holes), so the procedure
    is reversible. Once it's cleaned up and anodised it'll look like it's always been there. :D

    Damn that looks good. So, because you are securing the front of the door, it doesn't look like you intend on accessing the interior very often. Would be nice to have some kind of convenient spring-loaded catch there instead of a screw and cap nut so you can open the door without removing the front bezel. If anything to make better use of those gorgeous hinges you worked so hard on lol.

    Still, flawless work any way you look at it. :)

    one of the nicest mods I have seen.
    pity the aluminium work is all going to be covered.
    but judging from the sides, an all jarrah covering will look swell.

    Haha, Thanks. :lol::)

    Thank you. :)

    Thanks guys. :thumb::)

    Haha, thanks. :thumb: :lol:

    Thanks. :thumb: Yes, I was careful to make this reversible and of course your right,
    this solution is very ungainly and not very pretty. The top and front are to be hinged
    so opening the sides meant lifting the top and undoing the screw, about a 30 to 40
    second operation, way too long when a magnetic catch would mean opening a side
    could be done in a heartbeat. All I really need here is support, so see below. :thumb:
    Oh, and the only reason for hinging the top and front is to completely uncover the
    chassis when showing it off.

    Thank you. :) There will be acres of alu on the outside. ;)

    Thanks. :)

    The idea for fixing the panels never hit a home run, although I do like the bracket that
    supports the side panels. Support is all that is really needed here, and as Diosjenin
    and others have suggested, a magnetic catch is all that is required to hold the panels
    shut. It's a good idea just to be able to pop a panel and show someone the insides
    very quickly without any hassle.
    So to that end, both the "L" brackets and the support were modified to provide only
    support and basically get out of the way.
