This only started happening recently (in the past 2 days) and I'm not sure whats causing it. Everytime i restart my computer the graphics go back to "manual VGA" and in the display settings it shows the monitor at 800x600 in 4bit. I install the latest nvidia drivers for my card (9800GTX+) and it tells me to reboot and the screen comes back as normal. However once i reboot again the same thing happens. The error message I get when i go to the display settings is:
"The currently selected graphics driver can not be used. It is written for a previous version of Windows and is no longer compatible with this version of Windows.
System has been started using default VGA drivers.)

    Help please?

Have you Uninstalled the drivers in safe mode and run Driver Sweeper (or similar) to clear up any errant files/reg entries?

I get this on Vista and 7 on my main rig. From cold, it'll boot and install the standard vga drivers. The quickest fix I found is to reboot into safe mode, uninstall the vga display adapter, reboot normally and it usually boots fine.

I haven't found a fix to this and it's incredibly frustrating sometimes. I have tried using driver sweeper and thought I had it as it worked properly for a day or two, then out of the blue relapsed.

I'm just wondering if there's something common about our setups...

    CM Cosmos case
    Corsair TX750w psu
    GTX260 gfx card
    Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music

    It happened on my old Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4, Q6700 and 4 x 2GB DDR2 and continues to happen on my MSI X58M, i7 920 and 3 x 2GB DDR3.

    4 x Samsung 1TB F1 hdds
    1 x Corsair M64N1 ssd
Floppy drive/multicard reader via usb header
TomTom Go520 (empty dock while booting)
    MS Sidewinder X8 wireless mouse
    Logitech G15 keyboard
    D-Link 8-port ub hub
Glofiish X800 dock (phone not in dock whilst booting)
    Netgear 111v2 usb wifi dongle
    Sony sata dvdrw
    Samsung sata dvdrw

It started happening on Vista x64 a while ago after a driver upgrade. I farted about for ages and finally got it booting okay although I have no idea what I did.

Then I installed 7 and it worked okay for a while and again, after installing a newer driver, it played up again and I haven't been able to get it to boot normally.

It's a pain, more than anything, as it can be made to boot normally, it just doesn't do it normally. There's no hardware changes I can think of that would relate to it playing up.

I was wondering if it could be the button battery on the mobo itself dying? Just a thought

Maybe i'm being dumb, or maybe not... You installed the latest drivers?

Are the latest drivers backwards compatible with XP? As i imagine they were developed for Vista or even w7?

I know they should be... but stranger things have happened.

I can install the drivers and after it asks me for a reboot the graphics is fine, but once i shut down/reboot it goes back to 4bit.

Just to say I've done a system restore to last month (when it was all fine) and did windows update one by one and the problem has not appeared since. Truly stumped but its fixed now!
