    Hi all,

I am after some help / advice.
I have been a folder for arround two months now, have set up my own team (168648) and in 8k ranks. I am going to put all of my Folders on the same name and join your team.
My questions, What is the best way to fold on my rigs? What Clients do you reccomend i use?

    Gaming Rig:
    Intel QX6850 (quad extreme 775) @3.64
    4gb OCZ Flex @ 1332mhz
    Sli (x2) 9800GTX Ultras
    Asus Striker Extreme Gamer
    Veloc Raptor 300gb hdd
    4x 1500GB HDD’s
    BeQuiet 1200w PSU
    Fully Watercooled
    64bit vista ultimate / Win 7

    Media PC:
    AMD Pheneom 9650 @2.37 Quad
    8gb 1200mhz(i think) Ram
    8400GS (heatpipe)
Asus board (used as HTPC, not too sure what i put in at the mo)
    64bit vista ultimate
    2x 500gb HDD’s
    Stock Cooling (Antec Fusion case)

    My Server:
    Intel Core2Duo E7200 @ 2.53 OR E8400 (i have a spare E8400)
    2.5GB DDR800 Ram
    Asus P5Q Deluxe
    9400GT Heatpipe
    64Bit Vista / Server 2008
    5x 2000GB HDD

    Spare PC:
    AMD FX55
    2gb Ram
    Dfi LanParty Expert SLI
    7800GTX 512mb
    1x 500gb HDD
    64Bit Vista / XP Pro 32bit

    Dads PC:
    AMD Phenom 9550 @ 2.48 Quad
    4GB DDR800 Ram
    Asus M2N-SE2
    8400GS
    1x 500gb HDD
    XP Pro

I have VMWare on All pcs. If it makes any diff.

I also have a handfull of high spec laptops (i dont fold on them at the moment but given the OK i shall start)

At the minute i have the Windows Tray Client installed and running as a service.

    Many Many thanks

    Martin

Hello, first of all welcome to the forum and thanks for deciding to join the team! :)

    Here's what I recommend:

    Gaming rig:

2x Notfreds VMware folding application clients
2x GPU clients, one on each card

    Media PC:

2x Notfreds VMware folding application clients
    1x GPU client

    Server:

Put the E8400 in it, and run 1x Notfreds VMware folding application client
1x GPU client on the 8400GS

    Spare PC:

The FX55 won't be worth folding on, and the 7xxx series cards aren't supported unfortunately.

    Dads PC:

2x Notfreds VMware folding application clients
1x CPU client on the 8400GS

Foldig on laptops isn't impossible, but it is generally frowned upon unless you don't care if they die. Most laptops don't have the necessary cooling to keep a CPU or GPU (do mobile GPU's eveb fold?) cool whilst folding.

Switch all your windows tray clients to the console client. Don't be afraid of it, there's nothing to setting it up and it's a much more "no nonsense" version than the systray one.

Hope that gets you started anyway! If you have other questinos please ask :)

First of all, welcome to the team :)

A 9600 GT will give you around 3-4k ppd running either the console or GUI GPU clients, so is well worth adding to your farm.

Don't forget to enter the same username on old your machines either, when changing team number, so all your points get racked up under your name. Will your folding name also be SH4D0WM4NZ?

My pleasure. Folding on a VM is faster because folding clients in general run faster on unix based operating systems. "Notfreds folding application" is just a stripped down version of a linux distro (I think - he may have written part of it himself?) with both the 32 bit standard CPU client and the 64 bit SMP client built in. When it runs on a 32 bit host OS like WinXP 32 bit, as long as your CPU is a 64 bit processor and has virtualization technology, it will be able to run a 64 bit virtual machine, which will run the 64 bit SMP client, yielding more PPD than the standard Windoze based MIPCH or DENIO SMP clients and obviously more than the standard single thread CPU client.

I'm no guru like the rest of the regulars on here, and along with the folding vets present here, google has been my FaH teacher since I started folding again earlier this year, so if I am wrong in anything I'm saying here call me on it :thumb:

Keep an eye on your temps, the passive 8400's might fry if your case cooling isn't brilliant.

Make sure you set you vmware clients to low priority so they don't starve the gpu's of cpu time.

Hi mate, welcome to the team :D

VMware Workstation 6.x is fine, I use 6.5 myself as I have licences where as most will use the VMware Player as its free!

Nice one getting the machine up and running, have you downloaded the NotFred VM and put it into VM Workstation yet?

Heres a random guide I just quickly googled - http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=599272 also there is plenty of info on here, just have a browse though and any questions give us a shout bud :thumb:

I've got one passive 8400, it kept EUEing all the time until I added one of those PCI blower fans, now it runs solid and cool.
I'd agree with saspro on that point!

    Thankyou Vmuch mate.

Ill get working on it now.

8400s have now been replaced with some 9600GT's but i am now thinking of putting all 3 9600s in the same rig, my server i think. that E8400 is folding like a beast.

    Hi again,

Notfreds is up and folding (I think) i have it on VM Workstation 5.x and reconfig per team details.

Question 1* - Task Manager now only reads TWO Cores not 4, Why? I have set TWO notfreds up at 2x cpu each.

    Question 2* - DONE IT!

    Thanks again
