The car: For those who is interested, the parts i'm using: PC: (Will be mounted in the wheel well) - 1gb RAM (Not ordered yet) - AMD AM2 cpu - 10GB Internal HDD for OS (Will be changed.) - WD 500GB external HDD for music/movies. - External DVD-ROM. - 300W carputer 12V PSU. Gadgets: - GPS reciever. - Reverse-Camera. - Roadrunner Carputer-program. Example. - Internet. - 400W Power-Converter. More pictures to come! Stereo: (More to come) - Focal 5" in doors - Focal treble's - 2x Pioneer TS-W303R 12" - Pioneer DEH-4200SD (Will be replaced by a 7" TS Screen) - Custom made enclosure. - Audison amp. The stereo in the trunk will be build from scratch with MDF.
I didn't get a word, but that is some seriously cool stuff! I very rarely see computers in cars, so have some rep.
Have transelated it into english now, maby you understand something now? Sorry for bad english, i'm norwegian, hehe Thanks!
touch screens are crap for carputers, because you cant use a tactile feeling for buttons. I find yourself looking at it too long and thats where accidents occur. Other than that, i like it!
I'll try using it for a while, i think it will go great because of the roadrunner program. Its just a meny to navigvate through though. Thanks!
Nice work there bud I used to have a car PC myself in my old GSi, was awesome to have, in fact I may dig out the pics and shove them on a thread for the fun of it....
In fact I just dug out the pics and put them up here - http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=176680
I'm gonna follow this as well. I plan on doing my own CarPC soon, can't wait! Nice work so far, great job on the usb GPS, thats sweet. I have one question, you are mounting the pc in the sub box? I worry about the vibrations right there
As burnout said, it can be hard to navigate a touchscreen menu interface while driving. I had a carputer installed in my car, and while its a bit bumpier than most (alot...) which made it harder to press where you wanted, my monitor is mounted at the same height as the wheel, and it was still a ******* to navigate. I did a re-design of the roadrunner front-end for my dissertation at uni, its a good idea to customize it to do what you need it to do, not give you all the options in the world like it does. Another idea is to use a steering wheel control, or something similar to bmws idrive system using a 3dconnexion space navigator. If you have any questions, ask away, i will do my best to help you, even provide a custom golf-oriented front end if you want!
Cool, let me know when, and do a project log! In the reserve-wheel well, yes. Antivibration sheets will be layed around the computer! I didnt knew this was a big problem : o But thanks for noticing! Ive never used roadrunner, so alittle help would be great man!
I would just ditch the old banger and get a mini-ITX board instead. An Atom board will require far less power, fit into a fraction of the space and be faster... Seeing your audio kit you should be able to afford a 70 € mobo Other than that, keep the updates coming!
The computer i'm using now, is just temporailry! Ive never build a carputer before, so i'm using it as a test. M-ITX, new power supply, RAM and SSD will come soon!
