About my hdd mount I decided to change the shape so I can mount my hdd's vertical. I will do this because I had a discussion with WD and they do not recommend the 20' angel, and the fact that I don't want to risk losing my hdd. I also have not enough money to buy a ssd disk to replays my 300gb velociraptor/ 1tb spinpoint f1.

I will not have any mechanical/ hydrological things to make the curved shapes. How I will make it is a secret that you will find out when the time is there.

Hello, here is a small but picture full update.

I made the distance bolts for holding the motherboard and I finished the frame bars. To make the distance bolts I needed to make a small tool to hold the cone shaped bolts so I could make a m3 threat in it on a conventional lath. The cones are made on a cnc lath. The frame bars are drilled on a conventional mill.

Making the small tool:




Making a saw cut on the lath with a small mill mounted on it :






After cutting it of I neded to turn the rear side so I put a plate of the correct size in the cut:




The cnc lath I used to make the cones:






Mounting it in the little tool I made:






Big mill to drill the holes on for the frame bars:






The frame is done and put together with tape:

There's only one thing cooler than making unique stuff, and that's making your own tools to make unique stuff! Subscribed.

Obviously HDDs are mounted face-up and horizontal in normal configuration because the bearings are designed to support from below and to guide horizontally; I guess that those are unequal tasks? In 90-degree variations of that (sitting on side, vertical) I suppose the design is within acceptable limits because the disks are still spinning perpendicular to gravity; however, diagonally, presumable you get unequal stress as the disk tries to 'lie flat,' as it were?

Ah, I dunno what I'm talking about either...

Yeh I think it also have something to do with the bearings but I don't mind because I just have made the new design hdd mount and I think it turn out great.

I had some time to work on a cnc mill for my self so I grabbed the change to make my hdd mounting components.

Also I made the motherboard mount but that was done on conventional mill.

First is the making of motherboard mount:


1 motherboard mount finished and 2 with the distance cones:




Now the making of and the finished hdd mounting.
The mill I used to mill these 2 parts was 2 mm in diameter:

Now the perspex side holders, milled with a mill 4mm:

Yeh the bikes are typical Dutch every one owns a bike and some even 2 or 3. So thats alot of bikes
I am buzzy making cnc programs so I can make things when the machine is free. Also I made a start with making a mould for putting the fibreglass in pictures soon.

This is AWESOME!! Very well planned. I'm too very exited to see how you will create those complex curves on the panels without using somekind of crazy bending-machine.

He slipped and mentioned fiberglass molds earlier. I'm thinking we are wrong about what the outsides will be made of.

 

Its a ball bearing, not a bush I fail to see how it can wear unevenly. the disks are spinning so fast that angular momentum will override the effects of gravity as well. I can think that perhaps its a lubrication issue though or to do with the read and write heads.

I have an uncle who works for WD, and who knows alot about the designs, i shall ask him.

Looks interesting. Love the workshop. totally jealous.

The out side will be made of fibreglass that I will put in a mould and than shape to the correct size so I can put al the sides together.
